Newbie here, this is my 1st post so please be easy on me. I am planning on buying a 5th or 6th gen VFR (I used to own a 96 model) and want to put exhaust on it. I saw the thread with sound clips on it, but listening to them through tiny speakers is nothing like being there in person. The most important thing to me is how they sound. With that said what exhaust would people recommend to give me that V-8 stock car / Ducati sound. I prefer something that is not obnoxiously loud like most Harleys, and don't care for the sound most aftermarket pipes give with inline 4 type Japanese bikes. Thanks in advance! :biggrin:
Welcome to the forum! You will love the VFR. I have a 5th gen (2001) with a D&D slip-on exhaust and I love the way it sounds with the V-4. To me it has a more throaty tone than most of the other aftermarket cans. Anyway, thats my vote. -David.
I would save your $$ and do the mod to cut out the baffles in the stock exhaust. I think the stocks has the best overall look.
I was thinking of doing this on my 07 VFR. How much back pressure will the motor lose if I do this? I want to improve the sound, but I don't want to lose power while doing it... KC-10 FE was saying Microns were the way to go for 6th generation VFRs on another thread. I'm definitely looking into it now. If I were to install Microns on my 07, would the motor have to be retuned at all? Would back pressure be a concern? As you can tell, I need all the advice I can get :smile:
I would PM Tori as he has done his a few times and sounds good. It actually seems to increase power after done as I have seen his wheel come off the ground alot easier :wink:
Thanks for your replies everyone. I have never heard a VFR with aftermarket pipes before, so it is frustrating listening to sounds clips over the computer. After listing to the ones posted here and other ones on YouTube, I think Devils sound the most like what I want, but I think they are the ugliest. Arrows seem to be a close 2nd choice. Anyone else have thoughts?

PuCaudata, I highly reccomend trying the stock-gutted route. I like the look of the well-fitted stock system and she barks and burbles real nice after gutting. It may have gained some power,but not much. Great bang for the buck mod...I paid my welder $40.00 to weld the cans back together. If you are considering buying an aftermarket exhaust system anyway,why not gut the stock cans first and see if you like the sound,you really have nothing to lose!!!
I too agree with a few on here. The stock pipes look neat and sound great. I gutted the pipes on my 6th gen. It's very simple to do, saves you a bunch of money to spend elsewhere on the bike. Only took me 4 hours start to finish. Here's a youtube clip of my bike with the gutted exhaust driving down the road. Gives a good idea of the sound. I did the baffle removal this passed Saturday, it was a pain in the behind to cut them from the inside with the dremel, but got it done. Sound pretty good, not too loud as the full gutted exhaust. I used a 1 1/4" hole saw, and a dremel with 30 heavy duty cutting wheels. Took me around 3hrs. here is the link for the baffle removal: http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40885
If you are gonna gut your pipes cut the back of the cans straight through,top to bottom with a fine toothed hacksaw.(Easier to control than a reciprocating saw and you'll get a straight cut and a nicer welded joint in the end) Here's the trick;Make your cut about 1/2" past the factory weld and you'll have no need for a dermel,prybars,hammers,or anything nasty like that. The guts are tacked near or at the factory weld so if you cut past these tacks,your guts will slide out BY HAND or possibly with vice grips at the MOST. When did I say that? If I had a 6th Gen, I would use Remus. I remember saying that Microns are the loudest ones available for the 6th Gen. My official stand (obviously, these are my opinions, your opinion may indeed differ) on 6th Gen exhausts based on the ones I've actually seen on a bike: The stock cans look stupid & if I had a 6th Gen, the stock cans wouldn't last 1 week. Bos is the closest look to stock but the outlet looks like an after-thought. The TBR Stash is retarded... Really retarded... The new TBR M2 cans are actually quite nice looking. I've seen them on a VFR. a ZX-10, R1 & a Hayabusa. I hate TBR & those hacks are never getting another $0.01 from me so they would be out of the question. Microns are too long & I don't think too highly of Micron as a company. Staintune looks awesome & sounds awesome & has awesome quality (probably the best in the industry) but are also too long. Remus sounds pretty good. They seem to have good quality & the cans seem to be the best length available. To be perfect in my eyes, they should be about 2.5"-3" shorter. KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
