It's called exhaust wrap, summit racing, jc whitney, pretty much any preformance shop sells the stuff. I'm thinking about doing the same to my exhaust if I ever stop riding her long enough to do anything major that is!! Many other members have done upgrades to their stock exhaust. Exhaust wrap, ceramic coating, high temp paint, etc. Search the forums, you'll find plenty of info from previous threads.

The high temp paint will stay on if you follow directions on the can.

The high temp exhaust paint will not do much more than make it look pretty and will fail over time. I use it for touch ups and on smaller stuff like lawnmower engines and the like. If you want headers to last like they should AND look pretty, you need to look into having them ceramic coated. The cost is a little bit more but they will look fantastic and last forever. I took mine in to have them done and it cost me $140 to have them prepped and coated inside and out.

The exhaust wrap is almost strictly for thermal control. It will keep the heat in the headers and away from everything else. Depending on how well you wrap things and if you use a colored wrap, it can also be used for aesthetics. It doesn't protect against rusting, and colored wraps are known to fade over time, especially if you ride in the rain.

I'm assuming that you are working on the bike in your profile, the 86 VFR700. If that is true, I would HIGHLY suggest the ceramic coating. Pipes are going to be very hard to find if you need to replace them due to rusting out....
If you decide to go with some wrap, check this link: Design Engineering DEI 010110 - DEI Exhaust Wrap Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Summit was the cheapest for quality stuff when I was searching things out. Their kits from DEI are cheaper than buying paint, wrap, and ties individually.

The headers I put on my bike were nasty before I took them in. Here is how they came out after I took them for ceramic coating.

+1 to the ceramic coating - Jet hot is an example. You have to sand blast and super clean the pipes if you want a good job. If bucks are scarce, the high heat stuff will hold you down for awhile.
You still have to clean the crap outta the pipes to get a good job. If you are going to go a step farther and thermal wrap the pipes, you still have to seal up the wrap with a good high temp ceramic paint.
I have found the best stuff is this....

Summit is not a bad resource for supplies.

    Good luck
