I just bought a second 99 VFR800 because it was cheap,it has recently been serviced and has done 35000ks total. It runs fine but is not as smooth as my other bike and has a LOT more gear whine. My other bike has 22000ks on it and has never had the valves done so I was wondering if the new one has been set up wrong when the valves where done at the service? Maybe some are just louder than others?Has anyone noticed a difference between 2 bikes?
What type of oil is being run in each of the bikes? I would try using a synthetic or semi-sythetic oil to see if that makes a difference. Also make sure that your oil pump is functioning properly and that the oil filter that is being used is providing adequate flow. Does the oil light come on and then go off when the key is turned on? Has the oil light ever lit up for extended periods of time during normal operation? BTW...Everyone knows that Shell Rotella-T and Puralator Filter are the best for motorcycles  Regards, Rollin
I noticed that as the miles piled up on my old '86 VFR700 the gear whine from that engine actually became quieter over time. The gear whine from my old '97 VFR750 was noticeably louder than that '86 VFR700 Chickenstrip. And by comparison, the gear whine on my '04 RC51 has a slightly shriller chirp to it than either of those VFR's. Even with two of the same model machine,no two pieces of machinery are exactly the same. Some are louder, some run smoother, some make more power,etc.....
beer wine I got a bug up my ass back in the early 90's and milled .018 off the heads. I took the gear drive out and measured the distance between the gears and figured I was quite safe with taking that much off. The gear drive shocked me at how loud it was after that. It REALLY howls.
