Just got back from a ZRX rally in Eureka Springs, Ark., outstanding twisty roads, low police presence, superb traction and pavement conditions. A buddy of mine went with me, and because of last minute tire issues on his bike, I let him ride the '01 ZRX and I took the '99 VFR. Both bikes are equiped with brand new Conti Road Attacks, so they were equal in that respect. The VFR wins the distance comfort battle, even with the stock seat. My ZRX has a corbin and it's comfortable to sit on, but the bars are higher, so more wind blast. Handling, they are both equal, but with totaly different styles needed to go fast. The VFR needs RPM to wake up, so as you rail down a twisty road you are rowing the gearbox to keep the power up. I hit the rev limiter in 3rd gear for the 1st time ever. Lots of power over 6K and shifting up at redline gets a great lunge foward. The ZRX is just as fast, but you leave it in 3rd - 4th, and just gas it at the apex of the corners.......WOW is 3rd strong! Compression braking is good on both. The high wide handle bars on the REX makes for really light responsive steering (countersteering), and the VFR takes more effort, but the riding position makes for a better feel for the front tire. That being said, the road attacks worked very well with no suprises at all. I guess I'll just keep them both, and sell my 1970 Moto Guzzi V750 Ambassator. It's not getting ridden enough to justify keeping it around. All the ZRX guys really liked the 'ceptor too! I like both bikes alot, but if I had to choose only one...........at least today I'd select the VFR! And the Akrapovic equiped VFR wins the badass sound battle hands down! (The ZRX has an Akrapovic full system too). We put 1250 miles on both bikes, or about 750 miles just in ARK. Great ride and rally!
