    Hello all,

My best friend Ron lives in Philladelphia, PA and bought a 2003 VFR new this past year. He put 6k on it and took it two up from Philla to Maine and back but has been having problems with it since the day he got it.

I know this has been asked several times before but in searching the archives I never found a definite fix so here goes again.

The 2003 suffers from intermittent stalling. The bike does it at random times and random speeds and has forced Ron to cross 4 lanes of I-95 to get the bike off the highway twice and had it happen on the Walt Whitman bridge once. I got to ride the bike when I was in PA last week and got it to stall only when I came to a hard (rear wheel off the ground) stop. He has taken it to a dealer in King of Prussia for this several times, but they can’t seem to replicate it or find a problem. They also keep putting him off for two weeks at a time to get the bike in (due to having a backlog). I thought I would ask you guys if (1) Honda has addressed this problem and offered a fix. (2) Anyone else has found a fix. (3) Does anyone know of a good dealer in or around the Philladelphia area for him to take the bike too.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Ryan

Try using mid-grade or regular gas. I know it sounds goofey, but I had a few stalls too until I switch to mid grade. I learned about this on another web site VFRD and people were talking about how switching from Premium to regular smoothed out the 7,000 VTEC transition, KICK, to where it is barely noticeable. It worked and now I use mid grade. I tried regular, and that smoothed it out even more, but my bike has never stalled since I switched.

    Go figure!

It may sound goofy, but I had a similar problem for a short while when I came to stops, turned out to be idle adjustment. Make sure that after the motor is warm it is still idling above 1K. Good luck.

It's not goofy it was the problem I had when I first picked my bike up. The dealership didn't check the idle speed when they prepped the bike and I stalled about 10 times on the way home.

I remember reading an article in Motorcyclist, and the editor, Mitch Boem, a VFR nut, had a long term 02 or 03 VFR that was doing the same thing. Apparently, Honda zoomed in and took the bike back to Japan, and they gave him a new one. Not sure if they ever posted in the magazine what the fault was, but you may get some info there if you email them.

    Stalling problem

When I was still working at the dealership I had the same problem with my 02' VFR. Honda paid to replace the computer in it, but still had the problem from time to time. Eventually we decided to try the obvious and up the idle a couple of clicks, problem solved. Bike hasn't stalled once since then.

Hmm, I've never had the problem, but my bike is a 98. It also seems to be idled a little fast to me, but I just bought it and the prior owner was very meticulous about maintenance so I'm sure it's correct.
