First post on here so be gentle. Alright, I'm having an electrical issue with the bike causing the battery to drain. I was riding about a month ago and the bike died on the road. I got it back to the house and replaced the battery with a new, charged battery and it started right up. The starting voltage is 12.5V but after starting the voltage drops to 11.8V and steadily drops. Thus far I have: - Checked all fuses, none visibly bad - Replaced R/R - Stator replace 5K miles ago - replaced wiring connections in case they were bad. I'm getting 0.4-0.6 ohms on each of the 3 yellow wires - Started checking other wiring and haven't seen anything major I did find one connector (6 prongs) that was near the regulator rectifier with one lead that was discolored a darker yellow and looked slightly melted so I am considering jumping the connector. Any ideas of next steps? Thanks, Logan
Hi Logan and welcome to the Madhouse:welcome: I know your focus now is on electrical gremlins but when you get time please head over to the "Introductions" and say Hi to the rest of the folks on here, and maybe add a photo of your bike(click on the "Insert Image" icon then follow the prompts to select and upload a photo from your computer. You may also want to update your forum profile (Forum Actions/Edit Profile) to include the specs of your VFR and an approximate location city/state is fine - that way if you need help you may find someone nearby is willing to swing by and offer advice - especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge. :focus: It sounds like your bike is the latest to encounter electrical issues. Inherently all 4 elements of the charging system need to be in good order (battery, RR, Stator, loom) and a fault in any one can damage some of all of the others. The sad thing is a part can check out OK when cold but fail when things heat up. Its way too easy to just replace one item and think problem solved - so you need to verify things are right. So start by doing "the drill" TWICE - once with the bike cold, and then again after taking it for a 20+ minute ride - see post #9 on this thread http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/39277-How-to-fix-common-regulator-Stator-failures? That should identify which element(s) of the charging system need attention. Fix/replace identified components and then do "the Drill" twice more to confirm everything is running fine As the volts are way low it looks likely your RR is dead and if that crispy connector has allowed the wires to short it may also have killed off the Stator too. Do not assume new components are good test them. Sadly there are some rubbish fake aftermarket components out there which wont last. Just see later posts in that thread. So if you have to buy a new RR then get it from a reliable source and choose a decent shendigen RR which run cooler and seem to be pretty bullet proof. These folks sell quality components - http://www.roadstercycle.com/ Personally if the connector is showing significant heat damage it might be sensible to do away with it and solder and shrink wrap the wires instead. You will find a how to do it in the Drill thread linked above. Good luck - let us know how you get on. SkiMad
