EFI Problems

    I just came back from a shorter ride than I had intended to go on because my electronic fuel injection started to give me some issues. I was doing some highway riding, around 70 mph and 4000 to 5000 RPM when the FI light started to come on and I obviously lost fuel injection. I down-shifted and it didn't seem to happen as much when I kept the bike in higher RPM's. I rode home like that, but the light kept coming on followed by a brief moment of no acceleration. At one point, the bike shut off altogether! When I got home, I followed the procedure of self-diagnosis of any EFI problems, but the FI light didn't blink, it just stayed on, meaning that the computer didn't record any particular EFI issues. I just installed some auxillary lights and I am wondering if that's the problem, but this just happened today, and I have been riding for two weeks with the lights without problems. As a matter of fact, the lights weren't even on when this happened. Has anyone had this problem with their VFR? I have a 2001 VFR, by the way.

    Follow up

    I was sitting here thinking, if the FI self-diagnosis reported no problem, maybe that means that there something wrong with something else, and the loss of fuel pressure is a side effect (duh). So, could a faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel line give the same sort of problem? I was thinking at higher RPM's maybe the fuel pressure is high enough to drive through a partly clogged fueld line or something? What do you all think?

    I was actually thinking ignition or kill switch. The computer wouldn't interpret either one of these glitching as a malfunction. Does an '01 have a side stand kill switch (prevents riding off w/side stand down)?

    Electrical Issue

    Now I think it must be some sort of general electrical problem, and the FI light coming on was the bike stalling out. When I go to start the bike, it has a very difficult time, and it resets the clock. I am assuming that means power to the clock was temporarily shorted. I disconnected the auxillary lights altogether and the problem persists. I am wondering what I did when installing the lights that could have caused this? The lights supposedly needed 12V, so I spliced them into the tail lights. It seemed okay, but the coincidence of my current electrical problems and the installation of these lights makes me think I screwed something up.

    Any thoughts?

    Just a page from personal history, check or unplug you licence plate lamp & see if it make a difference. This was the culprit of a short problem I had last spring. Isn't the clock resetting something that has been mentioned several times w/ RR failures?

    I had a similar problem. My issue was that I didn't screw down the negative lead to teh battery all the way after doind some maintenance. When I hit pot holes the lead would jiggle loose, the FI light woult come on, and I'd stall.

    Really stoopid mistake that I thought I'd never tell anyone about...

    How right you are, Canib (like the name). I thought that maybe the battery was dying, so I went to check it with a voltmeter. I realized in doing so that I had forgotten to tighten down the ground wire on the battery after installation of my lights. It was quite a relief finding out it was that easy of a fix.

    Hey fellas,
    Attention to details is very important. we work on these things and then ride them at speeds that will kill you instantly (or worse, maim you). we should all pay careful attention to these little things. Ride safe. glad your problem wasn't major.
