ECM/Instrument compatability?

    I have a 2001 VFR800. I bought an instrument cluster for it off a 1998 VFR800. The Fault light is staying on when I turn it on and it won't start. It started once and I shut it off right away because I had to top up the rad (unrelated). I checked the part numbers for the cluster and the ECM and they have a number for 98-98 for both parts and different numbers for 00-01. Are they compatible or do I need an 00-01 cluster?
