I use this set up with a 3 inch extension when I go kayaking. I have a waterproof Pentax Optio camera that allows me to shoot video, even underwater when rolling or in the surf. I have never had the suction cup fail me, but I do use a tether just in case. It is basically a Sticky Pod suction cup (google sticky pod) and a Gioto small ball head. This will work only for small lightweight digitals so do not mount your DLSR here.
In this photo, I have it mounted on the fairing windshield, well within reach of the controls. Have fun...

that looks pretty cool but have you hit lots of bumps with it up front like that and it held? that would make me nervous as hell I think... Does your camera lens get bugs? I was thinking that deal you use stuck on the gas tank might give a good view right through the front windshield. have you tried it that way?

    Gas tank mount

I can mount it to the gas tank and with the 3" extension and it does shoot through some of the screen, but the radar detector gets in the way. Anyway, the camera is old and I am not worried about it being destroyed. But, it is tethered so if the suction cup fails, the camera is not going far as it is secured elsewhere. This is not a permanent mount. But if there is a stretch of twisties you want to record, it is just the ticket (that does not go on your record)! The Sticky Pod company makes custom mounts using several of these cups for professional videography along with plates, extensions and other gear. But for a small camera about the size of a pack of cigaretts, it works fine and is not affected by bumps. Using the extension and heavier cameras, it starts to wobble somewhat.
