After being frustrated with my speedo error and amazed at the amount of information available from a GPS "speedometer" app I have decided to use a standard "grab bag" (20$ at best buy) gopro kit to have an easy setup for attaching and detaching my smartphone from the dash.

    The bracket

I have a backplate for every day- and a backplate for the bike.

    All together

    And on the bike:

And here is a short video showing how fast I can toss it on or take it off.

    Thanks for looking-
    -Drew

****Disclaimer, I have ridden around with this and have not had any problems. Although, to be even more safe I have since added a safety line to the bike side adhesive mount as well as wrapping a rubber band around the phone when on longer rides. (I believe the weakest link to be the backplate's hold on the phone itself, a quick wrap with a band will ensure they stay together)

Very cool! Can't tell what you are attaching that bracket too? The windshield?

The bike side adhesive mount is on top of the dash. I painted the underside of the screen black and I felt that the slightly curved adhesive surface would bond better to the top of the dash rather than hanging from the top.

One of the reasons I like using it is because it saves most information for reference later if needed. I can also set the phone to straight speed mode which looks more like this:

Also, this app (Ulysse speedometer for android) can:

-show current speed (mph or kph)
    -show GPS accuracy
    -show moving average speed
    -max speed hold
    -total average speed
    -elevation
    -0-60mph time
    -0-100mph time
    -quarter mile time
    -compass
    -today/weekly/monthly/all time distance traveled
    -today/weekly/monthly/all time trip duration
    -date/time
    -controls navigation (google maps)
    -controls music app

All of this at the tip of my finger while riding if so desired. Or, I can just leave it showing speed and check up on all that when I come to a stop.

That's a great idea, I've been thinking of doing something like this so I can use my phone GPS.
I have a 12v socket wired under the seat, I could run a charger cord for the phone up through the bike so it would be clean looking.

    Yes!

That is the project for this weekend, moving the charging cord from under the seat for the tank bag to up in the dash for the phones new home.

All well and good...but how is this a "HUD", as per the title?

Maybe I missed something or am unfamiliar with the proper terminology but this display gives you almost an excessive amount of route and trip information in a location high enough that you can get all of the information without physically looking away from the road.

Will this app show Gforce at point of impact so when you ass end a semi or run off the road and hit a tree while analyzing data instead of paying attention to riding. Not that the Gforce data will be useful but I will look great in an obit or the next study of what offs riders most.

The assumption here is that you live near some trees. Semi's are everywhere.

Gforce at time of death is on the "pro" version of the app... Two dollars? I'll stick with the free version.

Some mention might be made in the news about how ya got dead. Obits especially those with pix of the dearly departed are more than a couple of bucks. The biggest racket is death notices. Those who must be obeyed say they need to have "originals" at sometimes a yard a pop. BTW ya don't really need anything but transverse G. Any deals on that?

    Clearly.

HUD is an acronym for "Heads-Up Display". The fact that you have to look down at your phone immediately makes it not a HUD.

Head-up display - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A HUD uses a projector system to overlay an image onto a screen. What you describe is simply a GPS unit.

    HAHAHAHAHA

    OK,

I'll be more specific for everybody viewing this thread-
You'll still have to look at the dash (as you always have) but for somebody like me, you WON'T have to look all the way down at the tank bag to receive GPS/Navigation/Music information. You can move your eyes without moving your head which makes things much safer when bombarded with typical distractions in a street setting.

HUD is also an acronym for Housing and Urban Development. ET could have called home on his cellphone.

pic #4, you might want to add a bolt to your brake M/C while you are modding

PS- true HUD are coming. i read an interesting tech piece about one last week.

Good eye on the bolt! Im adjusting the throttle lock, throttle, and bar end mechanism because it has been really sticky.

I didn't mod the bolt, I opened the controls and removed everything to determine what was making it sick. Turns out it wasn't the cables or the throttle tube but the rubber grip sticking to the throttle lock. In the pics that whole thing is on with one bolt hand tight bolt.
