I hear you bro... that's why I even go so far as to take the wheels off myself and take them to a tire place to just replace my online-bought tires.

Wow, guess we're pretty lucky here in NW Ark...there's a place called Ozark Cycle Sports that I usually get my tires from...usually around $90-150 ea. mounted/balanced whenever i've bought tires

I buy most of my gear online, but do purchase some things locally. Don't forget that the local shop has a lot of overhead that the online store doesn't have, and if you need that tire, sparkplug, air filter, etc. for a ride tomorrow, that online store won't be able to help you and that local store you've been ignoring is now out of business. What then?

I'm not defending high prices, outrageous service fees and such, but remember them if you can so they'll be there if you need them.

True Fj12, but I have spent alot of $ at my dealership durring my build for convienence and most of the time they had to order the parts for my vfr anyways. Almost a 100% markup over their competitors is robbery and their service is not all that great either. I will be taking my buisness elsewhere! There is not much I dont do myself on my bike with the exception of tires because I dont have the space to accomodate the tools necessary to do it proporly myself. That kind of mark up is absurd!

Agree about the local shops. Sometimes they hurt themselves. I needed a front tire (the one I just replaced) for a trip I was going on. The local shop had it and the sales guy gave me a good price and said they could mount it. Bought the tire walked back to the service dept and the service mgr said sure just leave the wheel and we can get to it in a day or so. WTF I was leaving the next day. So I mounted it myself like I normally do.

Here's a good place for tires. Best pricing I've found and descent shipping times.

    - American Motorcycle Tire

I buy some stuff locally and some via internet, including buying used items via forums and ebay. I'm fine with shops making a profit - that's the goal of every business. But outrageous tire prices really suck. Most of the time a dealership sells a tire, they mount and balance it, too, which produces even more profit from labor charges.

I have no ethical dilemma buying my tires online and taking the wheels to the dealer shop to have the tires mounted. They're still making money, just a little less, and I don't feel like I got screwed.

I've bought plenty of tires from a couple of local dealers, but not lately. Their prices are no longer competitive enough, so they don't get my business. I often give them a chance before I buy, but the deals are not available as in the past. I've told them I'd buy there if they would be a bit more reasonable (competitive), but they don't budge much.

I continue to have some of my tires mounted at the local Honda shop, even though I bought them elsewhere.

Most of the tires I've bought over the past couple of years have come from the local Cycle Gear store, on sale, and they've mounted several for me there.

I figure the local Honda shop already makes enough profit from me on parts and service. No need for me to be adding more to their profit margins.

Dayum, at ridedirect.com you can get the same thing for $139 front and $183 rear. They even have a bundle deal for $321.90, that's $145 you just saved with free shipping to boot. Now you see why I buy online

As long as you have a way to get tires on your bike, it is cheaper to buy online.
Most of the online shops have free shipping on purchase over $100.

Harbor freight is you fried if you want to change your own tires. They sell a balance stand and adapter for VFRs. cost to you is about $65.

I use tire Irons and some home made plastic wheel protectors and can change my tires in about 15 mins. Balance in 5 and get them back on the bike ....Most places will charge $20-$30 (per wheel) to change off the bike.

    Some links to Online tires:

Motorcycle Tires at TireExpress, the Motorcycle Tire Superstore

    that's MSRP not mark- up

I'm surprised they actually quoted you MSRP cause nobody else sells them for that. You can get great deals on tires over the internet of course but Cycle Gear will also offer sizable dicounts. When looking for Michelins..I recommend trying Sportbiketrackgear.com. They often have tire packages w/ no shipping charges.

You can go to the dealer and get screwed for the tune of 200 bucks more but why would you even suggest taking the hit to keep them in business-staying in business is their job.

I'm not saying you should take it in the shorts for the home team. I'm saying just don't lose sight of the fact that the online shops cannot supply you with short-term-gotta-have-it-now stuff. Support them when you can, that's all.

Those kind of mark up are why our local Honda shop is about to go under.
