My '83 developed a new quirk. The other day I drove to work, no problem. That afternoon there was no power to the ignition. A couple of days sitting and me trying to figure things out, low and behold, there was power and I was off. Not four blocks away i stopped and the local Kwiki-Mart, left the bike idling and when I came out ,stalled, same thing, no power to the ignition. My manual is no help, I found no shorts/broken wires. Could the rectifier cause such a thing? Any and all suggestions are would be of assistance.
Wiggle your key and see if that turns the bike off and on. If it does, replace the ignition with aftermarket. You'll have two keys now. If the new key is offset the same as stock, you can get one side cut to the ignition, and the other side cut to the gas tank and helmet lock. Replace the fusible link with an inline 30amp blade fuse holder. Wal-Mart has them for $6. The fusible link can break but still provide intermittent connection. The break can be invisible to the naked eye until you remove it. Also, remove and clean your battery cables and your frame grounds. Slather on some diaelectric grease to keep corrosion at bay.
