Do you plug in the battery tender to the plug-in or directly to the battery.

How do you tell if it is working?

The only time I use the tender is during the winter months.

I pull the battery out and bring it inside since I can't ride with snow on the ground anyways. There is an LED indicator light.

I advise against leaving it on for extended periods, even with the advanced charging circuitry I've seen it degrade a battery. Just plug it in for a day once a month in the winter if that's how you use it.

Based on the thread title, it would appear that you are trying to plug the battery tender into some sort of plug on your bike? Most battery tenders come with a pig tail that attaches directly to the battery and has an SAE connector on the other end. This usually mates up with the end of the cable off of the battery tender itself. Some kits have an SAE to spring clamps, which would be for momentary connections, like doing a quick charge on a free standing battery or on someone else's bike without the SAE connector.

Most battery tenders (Name Brand) have an LED that changes color when charging and when the battery is charged. Generic models make have similar indicators but ultimately once a battery is fully charged, taking the tender off is up to you.

Plug it in directly on a very long lead and this will give you a petrol/electric hybrid VFR. Just be sure to retrace your route exactly or you can get tangled up.

No, it does not come from the factory with that plug...Not exactly difficult to install one, however.

Did you get your bike new or used?

No, that is not factory plug but looks like someone had put one on there to use with battery tender. The light on tender tells you status of charger. Go here and click on the charger you have and then the "Documentation" under the picture and it gives you the instructions if you don't have. Tells you what the different color lights and whether they are flashing or not and what each means.

My bike does have that plug and is the one I described in my first post as the pig tail with the SAE connector, unfortunately this is not a factory installed item. The PO of my bike put the one I have on.

That sounds like the most likely scenario. If it sat on the show floor, they may put these on so they can keep the battery charged and ready to go.

Funny, I have heard about the degradation, however, my experience has been just the opposite with a battery tender over the last 20 years. Seeing as how most of my MC batteries (even a Walmart battery) last more than 5 years, it seems to work for me! YMMV.

Btw, I keep it plugged in whenever it sits in my garage unwritten.
