One of the things that's always keeping me from doing my own car/bike maintenance is not knowing how/where to dispose of used oil/coolant/brake fluid. Where do you dispose of this stuff properly? I've heard that car/bike shops are supposed to take any fluid you bring them and dispose of it properly, but I'm never sure if this is a US only thing or if it works in Canada/Ontario. In the past I've just taken my used motor oil to my parent's farm next time I'm there, where it gets added to a tank for use as chain lube, but the last time I tried that the pail got knocked over in the garage before we got rid of it, the wife was not pleased. This also doesn't work for brake fluid or coolant however, and my wife doesn't want me storing oil in the garage anymore.

    Anybody know?

I'm not being a smartass, but why don't you just call around a bit? I'd start with the places like Canadian Tire, and other large auto parts stores and go from there.

My experience is that a lot of info I get from the ol' interweb is not 100% reliable. :witless:

Here in Oroange County the city of Huntington Beach has a hazardous disposal facility and is free for residents of the county to dispose of all hazardous waste, oil, brake fluid, coolant and even stuff like batteries. You might call your city hall or check their website to see if they offer any such place. I even found a place that will take used tires ($2/each) so now I don't even worry about doing my own maintenance.

As far as auto parts stores, the larger chain stores here in So. Cal., Pep Boys, Auto Zone, O'Reilly will take in used motor oil. Not sure about other hazardous waste like coolant and brake fluid or if it's at all store locations.

Canadian Tire and Walmart take used fluids.

In BC Canadian Tire readily takes it. You pay an environmental fee so someone has to take it. Another option. If you buy your oil from a shop that does oil changes, I would demand they allow you to dump in their spent oil tank. Or buy your oil where they will allow this.

    Great idea, Randy.

You can also find businesses that recycle oil ... some of them will take the oil for free since they're going to clean / refine it for other uses.

I have 120 liters sitting here at the moment wanting to get rid of it. I have found a bloke with an oil fired paddel steamer who says he will take it. Has a reputation for being a dirty steamer though

I take it all to the dump in Waterloo. They have a place there where they take all of this stuff at no cost. Take note that they prefer you bring it in the correct container, i.e. brake fluid in a brake fluid container. They also have a limit on the number of liters of oil but I just save it up and take it once or twice a year. I have a three car fleet and change my own oil in all plus the bike so it adds up pretty quick. Damn women drive everywhere! They will take the oil filters as well.

Put it in your neighbors pool.
Dig a hole and dump it.
Pour it down the street drain/sewer.
When you are done, celebrate with a bonfire made of Styrofoam plates, plastic bags, and tires.

I take mine to the city of Guelph recycling depot / garbage dump. No charge for the service, they also take old cans of paint too.

City of Ottawa has a great recycling database on their site. Enter the item and it tells you where to recycle it. for example I can take used oil to any of the following:

I imagine every other city in Ontario would have a similarly extensive list of possible depositories, although perhaps not in list form. 311 would work too, if the Canadian Tire isn't close enough.

I actually caught some little ricer-peddling high school kids doing this late at night in my old neighborhood. I locked 'em up and flashed the lights and honked the horn just to watch them scatter. The real funny part is, my '89 Chevy S-10 Blazer that I had at the time probably dumped more fluids right there in the street than they did down the drain! Poor little truck.

Seriously though, the parts store here encourages you to leave it in containers outside the door. It always disappears before the next time I come in.

Most McDonalds will take oil to be used in their new healthyburgers and gluten free fries. Don't just burn those Styrofoam pacs, cut them in strips, roll them into cylinders light those and they make great smoke bombs so when you dump stuff into storm drains nobody can take pix of you with cellphone cams.

It used to be that Big Brother was watching. Now it's Ma Bell. Churchez la Femme..
