Hello all, I`m an old BMW guy. , I`m now driving a 1975 R90s. I`ve owned many BMWs R1100rs was my favorite. I`d love to try the VFR. I`m 62 so there wont be too much longer to try a high performance machine. I`d appreciate ,some info on the machine in general ie: ease of maintenance saddlebag availability, Does & dont on the machine. BTW I live in western NC, my R90s, although a sweet bike ,just doesn`t have the brakes ,handling etc. I`d appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance ,Charlie Levine.
Hi Charlie, welcome. VFR engines are bullet proof provided that they are serviced properly. There are a number of VFRs here in Australia that have done ~200,000km. A courier in the U.K. did 400,000 miles on one engine, had it replaced & has since done at least another 400,000 miles. 1986 to 1997 VFRs all have carbies, 1998 to present have fuel injection. Also from 1998, Honda's Dual Combined Braking System (DCBS) was introduced. 2002 saw the introduction of ABS brakes as an option.
Hi Charlie, Welcome aboard.... I am a BMW guy too. I almost bought an R1100s or an R1200s but I just took delivery of my VFR. I think the VFR is a great blend of sport and touring with a high dose of low maintenance and repair. A new R1200s was about $5000 more and is more of a sportbike now while older R1100s models are just a little less than a new VFR and have higher maintenance with about the same attributes in handling and touring ability. If the VFR wasn't a V4 I would have looked over it but the engine and general goodness give it a character and value that made my decision easier. I am planning to sneak a ride in today..... 43 degrees is warm enough isn't it? Good luck!!
Charlie - go for it. Youll find that the VFR with it v4 engine has as much soul and any BMW you have had and darn near zero maitenence. I think it would be the perfect blend of sport and tour for you. Any question on any paticular bike - ask here, and there are us fanatics can just about attack anything you could fathom. MD
