First post ever, love this site, been a member since i picked up my '02 in september of last year, 12500 on the clock, fun bike. Now I'm looking to fix it with 5 gallons of gas and a match. I've read through and surfed all over about R/R issues, it had the recalls, all 3, and now I'm on what looks like R/R number 3 for this bike. I went cheap, found one made by Accel on amazon ($82.95), but it only has 4 pins (2 red, 2 green) to go into the charging harness, what is the odd pin out? Right now I'm getting only 12v from the red/greens, but the little odd wire coming from the bikes sub-harness reads 20v at 5k RPM. Any one have a clue if I can make this work? I already emailed Accel, but alas...no response yet.

I'm not much help on wiring as it is not something I have dipped into yet with the VFR but I do need to ask... Have you by chance checked to see if all the wiring harness recalls have been done on your VFR? I believe that there were two for the wiring harness, and some years also had a recall on the brakes.

Many others have ways of beefing up the wiring for the VFR such as improved ground blocks and entire replacement harnesses, as well as using different R/R's I believe.

didn't think the new bikes (02 and up) had the same issues with the r/r... I'm losing another one on my 98 and it only has 74000 miles on the bike... I bought an r1 R/r on ebay for $40 that I'm gonna try and fit to the VFR.

yeah, all the wiring is solid, it has had the recall for the sub-harness, stator, and rectifier. The connections are good, I just need to figure out what I need to do with that fifth wire that is supposed to go from the sub harness, I might just have to buy another rectifier and install it instead. I'll be performing a cpu fan mod on it, I'll post pics after I'm done.

    From the manual:

Looks like a feedback wire of some sort, should read approximately the voltage at the battery. It's for the regulator's use, not the bike, so if the regulator doesn't have a pin for it, I don't think you need it.

I am doubtful of that 20V reading you said you got from it though, unless your regulator is pushing out over 20V...

the 20v came from the sub-harness' open b/w wire to ground, the rectifier has nothing to pair with it, that's why I'm scratching my head, everything else comes out 12v.

The million dollar question is.........have you had the "wiring harness recall" performed on your bike? They normally put a punch in the VIN sticker when they do the rewire. Just to be sure, call Honda and confirm.

just got message back from accel,:

    ACCEL Knowledgebase Question:
I just ordered online from amazon your part: Accel 201436 Chrome Motorcycle Voltage Regulator for Honda VFR800/A, 2002-07. it came in a sealed accel box, but it is missing a wire that my motorcycle needs, the instructions said nothing about the missing wire. After installing the part, the rectifier is still reading only 12 volts DC to tall pins except the one missing, which is reading 20v DC on the motorcycle harness side, but hasn't a pin from the rectifer to mate to. Am I missing something, or did I get the wrong part? My old rectifier had 5 pins coming from the rectifier to the charging harness, this one has 4. Do I need to route something additionally?
    Reply from Rep:
My schematics show it should be a 5 wire regulator and in one connector.

and that's all there is to it, just crappy distributing, I've got an old one from my GL1200, I'll check the specs on it and see if I can make it work

yep, had the recalls, looked at the marks, called honda, rep said too bad. looks like the accel rectifer, while cheaper, and a favorite aftermarket company of mine, has failed me.

CRAP! just checked continuity between stator and ground, picked up 1.4ohms, It passed the other tests(checking voltages at idle, resistance between legs, voltages at 5k RPM.
