I made a custom exhaust for my '04 today. I was going to just gut the stock mufflers, but I don't really like the way they look so I bought a set of universal fart cans on Ebay for $55 including shipping. They have removable silencers which is nice. I cut the stock cans off right where the pipes enter. The new ones have 2.5" inlets so I made reducing cones from some scrap stainless tubing. I also cut the original hangers off and welded them to the new cans.

It turned out pretty good. I'm not sure I like the look of the big tips, but it's different and that's at least worth something, right?. It weighs 9 pounds less than stock. It sounds great, without the inserts it's quite loud. I prefer it with the inserts in, it has a nice rumble that gets drowned out by wind noise at higher speeds. I'm sure I could tune the sound by changing the length of the inserts, but I'm happy with the way it is for now. Total cost was $55 plus some welding wire and a few hours work.

I'll see if I can get some video with sound.

    Nice work.

What I really want to know is, what type of paint did you use to paint your frame & hub & forks & etc? Or did you powder coat the stuff?

    KC-10 FE out...

It's Krylon Industrial aerosol, pretty tough stuff. I didn't have time to powder coat. I had the bike almost completely torn down to replace the engine and tires, so I decided to go black. I wish I could have done powder coat but I only had a week to get it back together. My guy could have gotten the the stuff done in time, but I didn't have time to strip the frame and forks so I just painted everything. I didn't do the footrests because I don't think paint will hold up, I'll powder coat them later. I still want to do the upper tripple clamp too. I'll leave that stuff for a winter project. Maybe calipers, levers, radiators.... not sure how far I want to go with it.

Around here "fart can" is a general term for a loud aftermarket muffler on a compact import car. If you search universal muffler on Ebay you'll get about 3000 hits, mostly fart cans. I sifted through them to find 4" diameter polished stainless steel body. They come in other sizes and carbon fiber too.

Here's a link to the one I used. It was the best deal I could find for two, I just cut them apart.

    and another I was considering:
    Carbon Fiber Fart Cans!

Also if you search for "N1 muffler" you'll find a lot of good stuff. Something to do with the latest drifting craze I guess. I'm not into it.
