Question for you guys! My 94 VFR is as clean as the day it rolled off the assembly line and it has 25k miles. I've owned about 20 bikes in my life and I've never seen what happened yesterday, to me or anyone else for that matter... Maybe this is a VFR thing? I'm looking for insight.

I ran 190 miles on the tank, so I had maybe a 1/16th of a tank left. The fuel light was NOT on yet. I fit 4.25 gal into the tank, left the lid open, turned around and started to fuel up my girlfriends SV1000. I sealed my tank pulled the key out, and as I'm putting my lid/gloves on, my girlfriend yells at me to look down at the bike and get back (motorcycle was hot)... The bike was simply POURING out fuel from under the tank. It was running down the left side of the frame, bottom of the fuel tank and all over my lower, , shifter, rearset, chain etc. I had to roll it away fromt he pump and it continued to fly out of the bike. Feeling like a complete ****ing newb, I couldnt find a petcock on the bike. So i just sat there as a pile of kitty litter is thrown around my bike. About 5 minutes and .5 to 1 gal later... it just STOPPED. No reason at all. Is this a common thing when overfilling a VFR on a warm day?

It was 73 degrees out and all I can think of are 1 of 2 things happened.

    1. VFR's have some sort of overflow, and that overflow valve stuck open when it thought I put too much fuel in (it was to the very top, but not overflowing out of the top).

    2. I gave my pops a jingle, and he thought it was the float bowl being stuck open. I told him there was no way, because the fuel was coming out so rapidly, i thought there was a sudden crack/hole in the bottom of the gas tank.

    IDEAS? THanks guys, in advance!

not likely the float stuck because the fuel overflows the mainjet and pours down into the intakes. You would have been flooded and hydrolocked.

There is a overflow around the outside of the filler ring. The small hole on the left side. If memory serves, there is also a tank vent on the inside that goes to a capillary type tube near the front. Hoses are then run down the inside of the frame to pour the fuel on the ground. 3rd gen had a funnel under the tank to catch the fuel from the overflow - kind of a hooky design IMO and the 4th likely has it too.

Are you sure it was really a half gallon or it just seemed that way in the stress of the moment? I have filled mine to the very top and then had the fuel expand in the sun and spill out like you describe.

Wow Crazy, that would definitely get ones attention. I can honestly say I've never had this come about. Yes there is an over flow catch thing there in the rim of the filler neck, but its on the other side of the flap, once you close the lid it's sealed. I'm with your pops stuck float? but then again if it was stuck why wouldn't it have leaked before you filled the tank. floats and float level have nothing in common with fuel level in the tank. Hate to say it but you'll be keeping a close eye on this huh? oh yea the vfr has a master tank valve that's a real PITA to get at in a hurry, it won't happen. one needs to remove the Tail faring assembly that wraps below the seat and includes the tail lamps etc. fairly easy, but still not something you could do say in a minute or less ,then prop the rear of the tank up a little bit to get your hands in there under the tank back middle. So I take it it's not having this issue now? just a weird one of ?

a stuck float on a VFR does not pour fuel on the ground.

The V4 is a funnel and the fuel pours down into the intake, not on the ground.

the last photo in this ebay ad for a 4th gen tank shows the petcock location and two nipples. One nipple is for the tank overflow on top and the other nipple is the tank vent. If you fill your tank up with cold fuel out of the ground (just coming out of winter where soil temps are low) and top off your tank on a hot engine possibly sitting in the sun, thermal expansion of the fuel will cause it to pour out the vent (the smaller nipple) and pour out on the ground.
