craigslist find - 86 Fox Shock New!

Hey Guys... I found this on my daily "vfr" search on craigslist. Not an exact fit on my 2002. I hope someone will snatch this up! He's asking $200.

hmmm...right around the corner from me...

 

It says that rebuild parts for these shocks are mostly unavailable on Jamie's website.
Do you guys think this shock would be worth the purchase due to a lack of rebuild parts?

Or would I be better off holding out for a used Ohlins, new Works or Hagon shocks even though the price is greater?

 

Go for the Fox. It's an awesome shock. I've had one on my VTR1000F for about 8 years and 40k miles. Had it serviced once in that time. I find it difficult to believe that seals and such are not available. Most companies just don't stop servicing legacy products. That's bad business. You should call them at 831-274-6500.

Unfortunately it has been years since we’ve supported the TC shocks but you may be able to get some service from Lindemann Engineering in Campbell California.

They have helped people out before with these shocks so they may have some options for you, their phone number is 408-371-6151.

Maybe if we get enough people emailing them they might decide to remake parts. I sent an email to Jamie to see if he has any rebuild parts available.

 

Lindeman has an awesome shop. He rebuilt the forks on my '86 700. Talk about a transformation. For the '86, he's recommending the WP shocks. But I'd give him a call on if he can do rebuilds on the Fox TC. He's got a good crew there.

 

There are no seals in the TC Fox shock. It only has O-rings to replace if needed. I use 5w fluid in mine. The TC is a great shock and that price is a steal!

 

Jamie said he has all the rebuild parts in stock including different rate springs for the twin clickers.

Hey Grey- do these shocks have nitrogen in them that you have to refill at a certain pressure like the Ohlins shock?

If that's the case it wouls take a few specialty tools to rebuild these yourself. That means $$$.

 

Yes it does use nitrogen in the bladder, that's inside the little canister with the compression damping adjuster at the end of the hose . It takes 300 psi. I get one of my local shops to fill for $5. No special tools except the wrench to get the spring off. It might be the hook looking thing in the box. Other wise a good pair of snap ring pliers and a good pick to get the round lock rings out. You want to make sure the rebound damper adjuster(blue ring on bottom) is backed all the way out before taking apart and putting back together. I do have the factory rebuild instructions if they don't come with the shock. Mine did. Could be the white booklet in the box. When I ordered mine I ordered it for a 180# rider and the spring is a light Grey color. Not sure what the red spring rate is. Not really sure if all springs were color coded. Either way it's a good deal. Can we say hens teeth?

 

Dukie, you going to grab it? If not, I think I will. I've not been happy with the rear-end on my bike lately. Lots of wallow unless I set the preload extra high, and then things are just harsh. I don't like the excessive preload making the rear-end jumpy in rough turns, either.

If you are experiencing wallow check your steering head. My ST1300 was doing that and after servicing the headset it took care of it. The worst part was the $76 tool needed to adjust the bearings (I don't know if the VFR uses the same tool).

 

Mike, I did the steering head last summer, this is pretty distinctively the rear suspension, especially on bumps. Straight and smooth and the steering is great.

 

I sent my check so hopefully that guy is for real, if it is I'll have a rebuilt NOS Ohlins for the A bike and a soon-to-be rebuilt NOS Fox for the B bike.

Interesting that Fox recommends Lindemann , he's got to be the best !

He did a super job setting up the forks on my friend's RC 51.

Anyone know the rate of the spring Fox supplies as standard ??

Jamie just rebuilt mine. Works great. But hell yeah $200 is a great price. Also that appears to be the same as mine, wich doesn't have the ride hight adjusment. Still a great shock though.

 

I am assuming this shock is stock (because it has never been touched) and the writing on the spring is 6.0 X 800/152 X 14.3 .

Maybe you spring gurus can help on this one.
