Had the swingarm off my 5th Gen for new bearings and seals. Put it back together and the swingarm bolt is coming out the other side too far. Like there's a washer that should draw it out maybe a quarter inch. There's no side to side play and it moves freely. It was a pretty routine bearing job. What am I missing?

Also replaced the brake pads. They now work by the brake pedal but not when I squeeze the front brakes. Is that normal?

The rear brake is actuated by the front left brake caliper. When you apply front brakes it causes the left front caliper to grab the rotor which in turn causes the caliper to rotate upward and push on a piston that applies brake pressure to the rear brake. Meaning the rear brakes only work by the front brake handle when the bike is moving. You can look up parts diagrams on say... Cyclepartswarehouse.com to see how the swing arm goes together.

Thanks for the learnin' on the brakes. It's my first linked system.

I checked the parts diagram on Bike Bandit. Looks straight forward. I've done more than one swingarm in my life so this ain't new territory, just a brain fart. The black plastic end cap won't go on.

If your bike has less than 50- or 60,000 miles, i'd think swingarm bearings were still good to go but linkage bearings might need a dab o' grease.

They did seem to be OK but if I'm in there, I replace them. At 24k the neck bearings were shot and the bike needed a good going over.
