I've got some money that I have to spend at the dealership, about $1300 left over from an insurance claim. The adjuster insisted that the check be made out to both myself and the dealership, and of course the dealership insists that every last penny is spent there. I'm not happy about it because there just isn't much I need or want to buy. So in an effort to piss some of this money away, I ordered the Throttle Miester. I have searched different threads regarding opinions but have only found a few scattered stories, one of which included an accident that the rider said was the fault of the Throttle Miester. After reading that, I found that my panties were bunched and I'm rethinking the order. So I'm wondering what the general opinions are about these things, good or bad. I'm assuming that I have a day or so to cancel my order if need be.

Any other suggestions on how to spend money at a dealership when your bike needs no more modding and you own all the safety gear you're going to need???

Have you thought about buying a bike from them an turning around and selling it then pocket the cash? I would try to strike a deal on a small MX bike. Even if you lose a couple bills it's better than buying a bunch of stuff you don't want.

Sounds like your insurance guy is getting a piece of the action. I'd be calling somebody in the insurance company to find out what the real deal is. Buy a widget and ask for your change in cash and see what happens. Seems to me that no one can force you to spend your money where you don't want to spend it.

Insurance companies are regulated by the states. Some operate differently than others. If you are still in doubt about what is what after going over this adjusters head, call your state's insurance comissioner.

Same ThrottleMeister on my 91 for years. Stock bars, one set of Heli-bars then another set. Zero problems. I don't think I'm dead which proves at least that they aren't killers. Why buy them from the dealer anyway. ThrottleMeister will have some in your mailbox in a couple of days.

Some of the dudes here like the plastic paddle things probably made in China. Others like cruise controls..(lol) I guess so they dont have to do much but tune in to Oprah and program in the route to the nearest WalMart on the handy-dandy GPS..

All this of course is just my very unbiased opinion..;)

havcar - I need bearings, headgaskets, brake pads, Tstat, carb insulators....

I guess I could reimburse you cash for them too if you aren't feeling generous.

Or, you'll always need tires, order tires and keep them in the garage out of the sun.

EDIT: oh, and maybe a spare gas can for those long rides between stations out in the eastern plains (poke billy)

I was thinkin' similar thoughts... order some kickass tires, maybe a wheel chock or swingarm stand so you can lift the bike at home (provided you don't already have one)... let them pay themselves for your maintenance and tunes...

And of course, you can always buy me a helmet if you're feelin' up to it ;P

Completely aside from my uber smartass post above, I think Park800 has a really good idea there for a one and done shot of cash to get it in your hands quick. Or you could see if they will do a group buy on some tires or something and we can start another thread for that.

I thought about letting it sit there to cover the valve tune next season, but todays economy tells me that I should spend it as quickly as possible, before the dealership has a chance to go out of business. The tire thing had crossed my mind but tires are so much cheaper online. However, I will check the group rate thing. I'll just stick with the Trottle Miester for now, although that's only $115 and then see if they've got an inexpensive used MX bike or if they get the price right, just buy a shit load of rubber. If I were more mechanically inclined I could find some things to spend it on, like pyro said. Alas I am not, so buying stands, or air compressors and the like won't be on the radar for me. Hmmmm...Radar Detector!

I'd love to say thanks for all of your responses by buying parts for everyone, but I probably won't.

Getting back on topic about the Throttlemeister, it is a great unit. Very well built, looks fantastic, and works like a charm. The only reason I could see the unit causing an accident is someone not paying attention and using it improperly (when they shouldn't be). My 2004 came with it when I bought the bike and I use it frequently on the highway. It can be a tad tricky sometimes to get the speed set just where you want it but I honestly don't think I could expect anything better out of just a throttle lock. You can still manipulate the throttle just fine with the Throttlemeister engaged in case you want to adjust your speed or you need to chop the throttle closed for whatever reason. I highly recommend the unit to anyone in the market for such a thing. Short of actual cruise control, its the tits.

Other suggestions to spend the money on would be to stock up on some normal maintenance items such as cleaners, oils, filters, perhaps a single set of tires, or maybe even suspension parts for an upgrade. Surely the stealership can order RaceTech parts for your forks.... or a blingy bling Penske rear shock. I bet if they wanted the money bad enough and you wanted some of the OEM Honda CF accessories they could get ahold of them. Factory hardbags maybe? New gear? Doesn't hurt to have a few common spare parts laying around for the bike such as the trim clips, a few misc fairing bolts, spare brake/turn/headlight bulbs. Lots of little options for you to spend the money on.

Of course if they really insist that you use the money up, see if they will put it on a gift card instead of having credit... that way they can't screw you out of it as easily. Use it as you need it :)

A little over a yard for a ThrottleMeister and the rest could go for those plastic screw clips $7.50 a pop.

Or maybe if this shop is a multi-brand dealership a Harley penis extension for Cundalini. One size fits all.

Thank you one and all for your posts, I took a little advice from everyone. I went to the dealership today initially looking for an MX or a scooter that the $1300 would cover and nothing was available.

So now on with plan B, which was to purchase a few things I know I'll need in the future. I am going to try the Throttle Miester ($115) and if I don't like it, than selling it shouldn't be a problem. I also purcased two Metz M3 rear tires and one front for a total cost of $390, one 45t hard anodized Titan #520 aluminum sprocket from Sprocket Specialist for $90, a 16t #520 ultra light front sprocket from JT for $23, a D.I.D ERV3 chain #520 for $135, 2 pairs of Alpinestars GP knee sliders for $100, 2 sets of TCX toe sliders for $30, a light smoke face shield from Shoei at $40, and Progrip 719 RVGS gel grips for $13. All said after taxes I was able to spend about $1000, leaving just under $300 yet to spend. I took the remainder in the form of a gift card so that at least the money was in my hands, rather than some kid at the dearships hands.

Such a deal! Three hundred bucks is the exact amount it will cost to have a set of those new tires mounted.

Maybe they will sell you a few bucks worth of Preparation H when they finish the mounting. ;)

Just wanted post up my opiniion on the throttlemiester now that I've got a season with it. Like Meat was saying: it is a nicely built part and install was simple. I have found that I am rarely able to actually engage the lock as my riding won't often allow for it. It did perform very nicely the few times I was able to use it. I like the fact that it locked the throttle position while still giving me the ability to manually twist the throttle for small adjustments, or to completely kill the gas in an emergency. They also look good installed, just wish I had more call for its use...or maybe not, I guess that would mean a hell of a lot of straights.
