So now that I'm finally getting some seat time in on my VFR I'm wondering about the coolant temp. It's been relatively cool here (60's) and I noticed when I keep moving the gauge runs around 1/3 to 1/2 on the gauge. When I'm stopped in traffic I've seen it climb as high as 2/3 or 3/4. Is this normal for a '87 VFR700? I just topped up and bled the radiator and overflow tank after having things apart so I know it's full.

Also, is the fan full time or automatic? If automatic, when does it kick in? Could I hear it? Is there any way to verify it's running?

    Thanks

The fan is automatic, but the sensor is suspect on these older ones. If you can hear it kick on it should be alright; as far as temp mine also runs 1/4 to 1/2 way on the gauge during normal riding but gets very warm very fast when sitting, also normal. One way to rectify the problem is to hard wire a fan on signal to a switch & kick the fan on so it runs all the time in slow traffic this will keep it a bit cooler because the fan will run before its normal kick on temp which is quite high to begin with.

Mine seems to be doing better now. I think it's because I changed the oil. I was running some cheapo stuff in there as just a flush before switching over to Honda GN4. I've only seen it get to just over 1/2 while sitting in traffic. Still can't determine if the fan is kicking in or not.

Nice warm weather today so we will see how it goes.
