I heard that you can rent a diagnostic code reader from some auto parts places, has anyone done it? If so where did you go?

All the code readers I've seen are for cars, OBD series. If you look in the manual it tells you how to jumper the test connector and read any stored codes (at least on 6 gens and I hope on the 5th gens). If you need the manual, I believe you can down load it for this site.

If you are asking about a car Auto Zone will read the codes for free at the store. Some older cars have a jumper point also and you read the flashes from the check engine light.

I did the jumper wire bit and started counting flashes but quit after 20 "long" flashes. I am not sure if the system just keeps going or it stops after the stored codes have been read. Either way what I saw did not match up to the manual, unless of course I am completely screwed up and that is a strong possibility too.

Have you tried to clear out the codes and see if any reappear?

No, I thought about it but was not sure if I should or not. The bike runs like a champ still so it might not be a bad idea.
