    How goes it all,

I'm riding an 87' 700 with 27000 on the clock and its making some noise that I prefer not knock back drinks with. I've had it for over a year and have always noticed the noise, as of late however it seems to be getting worse.

The bike shifts fine most of the time, though occasionally it will shift hard, especially when cold. When it does shift hard I've noticed that it makes a double clicking noise. Now for the meat of it all. If I have the bike running and in neutral with the clutch handle let out, I can hear the knocking/tapping. It's not a deep knock, but more of a tap that is unchanging and consistent. When I pull the clutch lever in, it disappears. Clutch pulled in, no noise, but let the lever out and its knocking on your helmet.

Great gurus that be will you please help me?

I'm confused then. If the bike isn't moving when I perform the test and the idle stays the same how would the carb sync effect the clutch in this case?

As I understand it, each carb will be providing a different idle fuel air mix. So each cylinder will be running a bit differently. Causes engine to run a bit rough and rattle clutch. Boldors do exactly the same when carbs out of sync.
If balancing carbs does not help then maybe clutch basket rubbers have hardened and shrunk.

Start with checking the carb sync. If you have a lame cylinder then the clutch will let you hear it. If everything is good up top then your pulling the clutch and checking out the basket and rubbers. There is also the release rod/pin if its worn or bent it will catch and make a tapping noise.
