I've had the new 06 VFR for about a month and the gearbox feels a little clunky in comparison to my last bike (04 SV650) which had a pretty smooth box. Changing down on the SV with a little throttle blip was as smooth as silk.

I can't get the same smoothness with the VFR, not sure whether I timing the change that well or whether the box needs a bit ot time to wear in (only 1300km so far) or maybe I just need more practice ?

It is not causing me any great concern but just want to know other riders' experiences ?

I have an 04 with 1000 miles. It shifted smooth from day one. In fact it seemed get even smoother after the first oil change, done at 300 miles.
The second oil change done at 600 miles didn't make any difference.

Mine seems "notchy" at times. I think its just how I prepare to shift and how I do it. You migh see if Factory Pro has a shift kit that will work for your bike. They have a spring, a detent arm, and the star available, depending on bike and model. Their website is: http://www.factorypro.com. Once there in the drop down menu on the upper left, choose: Shift Stars.Evo.FactoryPro and it will take you to the page with the kit. I hear it makes for more positive and smooother shifting.

This is a tough call. I had an '03 SV1000 before getting my '05 VFR. I had no specific complaint about the VFR gearbox. Easy shifting with no false neutrals or missed shifts. Nevertheless, I did think the SV gearbox felt better. A little more precise.

I installed the Factory Pro shift kit after reading glowing comments from others who had done it. No question it is better. Softer and more precise. But it isn't a huge improvement. Perhaps the sixth-gen gearbox is simply very good to begin with. The kit is about $200 USD plus about four hours labor. Not sure the improvement is really worth the cost.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll run with it as is until the 6k service and talk to the bike shop. It does shift easily and there are no false neutrals maybe it's something I'll get used to over time.
