I've noticed since it has been getting colder in the morning and evenings the bike has been harder to start. Yesterday morning it took me a little bit of cranking to get her to turn over but she did come alive and ran like a champ. This morning I go to start the bike and all I get is clicking from what I believe is the starter solenoid. I have lights and everything electrical works, but it won't crank over and it just clicks. The clicking is rapid and coming from the little box to the left of the battery. Dead battery? It was new at the beginning of the season and only started giving me problems with the temperature change.

Also, for the last two day I've noticed when I park the bike I put it in neutral and turn it off. When I go to turn her back on and and crank her over it is not in neutral anymore. I first I thought someone was messing with me and putting it in first gear, but it happened a couple times in a row at my house while I was watching. What gives? Is it tied to the dead battery? This problem also started with the climate change and when the battery started giving me issues.

Hmm....I am not sure about the neutral thingy.....maybe you have a faulty neutral indicator....or maybe your bike is haunted! For your other issue....you need to test the battery voltage when it is clicking like this. Test it off, test it running at idle, and at 5k or so. Then you can start to rule out if it is the battery, R/R, stator, bad ground, starter clutch, or whatnot.

First off, my neutral issue stopped after I charged the battery, not sure what that was about.

As for the battery; when I got the charger out and hooked it up it read 5.5 volts. I put it on the charger for about an hour and she was back up to 11 volts, but the battery was extremely hot to the touch and I could hear the acid bubbling inside. I let it cool down and popped the battery back in the bike and it started like a champ. I let it run for about 10 minutes and turned it off. I tested the battery while off and it read 13.04 volts. I turned it on and let it idle and it tested 14.40 volts, I turned the choke on and the RPMs when to about 5,000 and I tested and it came out with 14.91 volts.

Something to worry about, or is the battery just old and the person I purchased it from lied to me?

I think your battery is toast my friend. Batteries can get hot when you do a rapid charge on them....best way is to put a tickle charge on them overnight. Batteries like to be slowly recharged more so.

It sounds like it is reading good voltage when it is running though. You need to check the voltage after the bike sits a bit, or turn the kill switch off, and crank it for several seconds, and see if the battery voltage drops way down rapidly.

First off, thank you... Second, I have a 12v battery charger that I got from Wal-Mart about 7 years ago. It has three settings, conventional, manual and maintenance free. I've always done maintenance free, should I be using a different setting?

proper charging rate is 1 or 1.5 amps/hour

a battery can be ruined if it gets hot while charging
