Hey, I bought a multi-meter and haven't really used one since college physics. Anyway, I remember the basics of choosing the range, etc, but what I need to know is on the three prong plug of the headlight, where should I put the pos and neg and what reading should I get. My headlight doesn't work but the bulb looks fine to the eye.
You need to put the meter on ohms for resistance. You're goin to check for continuity across the prongs of the bulb. This will let you know if the filaments are good. When you have continuity (a completed circuit) the needle on the multi tester should peg all the way to the right. If you have a digital meter you should get some sort of infinity number. I'm not sure which posts to test across, but one should be a ground and the other two; one for high and one for low beam. Connect the black to ground and the red to one of the other two posts. This should take care of your test.
I forgot to mention I tested the bulb for resistance and got something, but I don't remember the number. I do remember the number on the plug were pretty low voltage, though. Do you know what they should read? It seems like one way I did it I got a neg number and the other i got like 2.something... I really suck at eletrical stuff. I get to looking at all those wires and start seeing spaghetti!
You should get 12v at the plug for the light with the ignition on reg. If you're gettin 12v at the plug, then it should be a bad filament in the bulb. If you get a neg number at the plug, then your red and blk leads from the tester need to be reversed. Swap em to diff holes in the plug until you get the pos. number. Don't worry you can't hurt the tester. But 2 doesn't sound right.
