So I have about 350 miles on the bike and time for some chain maintenance. So I spent a bit in the shop and came up with one.
Maybe I will see if I can find a roller pin like the one that comes with the Pitbull stand.

Excellent work! Could you build me a set of headers for my 1991 VFR for less than 5K?

Nice job there. You could probably make a few bucks making and selling these! I have to say, that is one thing I miss being able to do, fabricate my own tools, parts and pieces.

Very good, yea ain't it nice to have the skills and tools do do this sort of thing. I was wondering what you used to figure the ratio in the lift part of the stand? looks like it may take quite the tug to get it up?

Employing Archimedes who was an old Greek guy instead of an old Chinese guy for a change, figured out he could lift a whole shitload of heavy with the right lever and fulcrum. He also noted that he had to have a good place to stand. Lifts like that to save having a long lever can be put in place then lifting the bike by stepping on the end of the lever. For the less fortunate who don't have big shops a similar rig can be fashioned out of steel plumbing pipe.

I mocked up a test one first from some smaller 1" tube and went with "what I thought looked good"

I took some measurements as the first one I made did not give me enough lift and the tire was just barely sitting on the lower support. I also wanted a few more degrees of lean. Made some changes and used the 1.5"x.120 tube and just went with it. Added a 30* kick to the handle to make it pretty, or easy to grab, or maybe just because I wanted to blow the dust off the JD2 Bender..:biggrin-new:

Its not bad, it requires a little push but surprisingly not too much. One hand on the bike and one hand on the lever. Since I have always had cruisers and had a hydraulic lift this was my first time ever using a life of this kind.

I have a Pit Bull SSSA stand and it too takes a little effort to get over to the fully deployed position. The handle on this one though is straight, no bend in to make it easier to grab, so yours has a little nicer feature. However, the one thing I like about the stand I have is that you can rotate the handle so that I can use it by pushing the handle forward. This works great for when you need to keep the bike on the stand for a while, as the lever doesn't protrude behind the bike creating a tripping hazard. Some of their stands also have removable handles for the same reason, reducing a tripping hazard. All in all, yours looks very clean and easy to use. I will say that some of the smaller diameter tubing stands usually add some sort of brace between the handle and the vertical part of the stand. Most likely to appease the lawyers but perhaps also to ensure durability. None the less, still a good job :thumb:

Just curious, do you know what size tubing is on the Pitbull stands? Maybe you can throw a caliper on it for me if you get a chance. I would imagine 1.75" or so, but I would think they would probably only use .090 wall but I don't have one to measure. I jumped up and down on the bar that would go through the wheel with little to no deflection, but I did end up doing a 2 pass weld on the joints too just for grins.

Also does the pin that go through the wheel have bearings on it, I thought I read somewhere they did. My other option was a solid bar with a Delrin sleeve over it.

I'll take a few measurements and some pics for you. The hub pin does rotate on a bearing. it's a very clever design, it also allows then to offer different pins for different make/model bikes. I have a few pins so I can work on a few other bikes that my friends own.

So here are the measurements I was able to take. I tried to be as precise as I could but I'm sure the caliper I used is going to have a +/- factor. Here is the tubing diameter and thickness. The top photo is the lever and main section tubing size, the lower two are the carrier tube size and thickness for the bearings that hold the center pin.

These are shots of the center pin and housing.

Here's the dimensions of the bearings, both in inches and MM.

Awesome! Might just have to find me some goodies online, maybe I can pull that part number on the bearing....

Didn't he say "Give me a lever long enough and I can move the world".

As long as it's not a body part, I'd be happy to oblige!

    Correction...a male body part...

Is there an age limit on females? Or just a limit on sag? (Not talking suspension here)

If you get around to building a stand in line with the Pitbull design it will be interesting to see what the cost will be in the end
The Pitbull is without a doubt a very well built and solid stand but the price of a new one is very high
Thank god I got lucky and found a used one for the 90, but it was still pricey.
