I just picked up a 86 VFR 700f and I'm wondering in if anyone has converted one from carb to injection, and if so how did it go? I picked the bike up for $400 she needs a little TLC so if anyone has any advice or tips for me i would love to hear it. I'll post some pic's of her soon.

I have an '86 VFR750F (carb), an '86 VF500F (carb), an '07 VFR (FI) and recently sold a '99 VFR (FI). The carbed '86 bikes are way smoother than either the 5th Gen or 6th Gen. Why would you want to go to FI?

My '00 is far smoother than any carb'd bike i've owned. Fuel injection rocks, i'll never own another carb (unless it's on a lawn mower).
Imo, a conversion like this would be more $ and hassle to ever be worth it - enjoy your cheap ride until you can afford to upgrade.

I say that because the FI is very sensitive and precise to input. My '86s are flawless and way, way smoother. That has always been my experience with FI. I like the fact that the carb maintenance is eliminated, but I don't think it makes the bike run better. I'm thinking of installing a PCIII to see if that makes any difference.

LOL yea one would think FI has it all over carbs Well not over my bike. 97 VFR, I trade rides with a 98 and 00 and they both said mine has a smoother feel to it. I in return thought the 98 was lame. huge throttle slack which could be adjusted the 00 wasn't so bad, so I'm thinking here must be how well it's in tune from the start.

Yeah carbs rule, that's why every car /truck since the early 90's and pretty much every bike nowadays has gone to FI.

Who said that? The fact alone that you don't have to deal with carbs makes FI worthwhile. However, FI on the VFR does not seem to be as smooth as the earlier non-FI models. Like I said, I've owned a 5th Gen and 6th Gen and neither is anywhere near as smooth as my earlier model Interceptors.

Both my '83 Ceptor and my '82 Sabre are smoother than my '07VFR. I've never had any issues with the carbs. FI does have some advantages, emissions is a biggie, but for me, the carbs work just fine.

Yeah I know FI has more positives than carbs but just wait till you get that first FI light and the bike just quits while you're out in the middle of BFE. Then you'll know why the moniker fuel inFection came about!

LOL, Carb's and I seem to be mortal enemies. Everything with a carb I have ever owned has been nothing but a pain in the ass. Fuel injection is so easy to understand in comparison it's silly. All this worry about a fuel injection system failing (given modern electronics) is pretty silly. Modern fuel injection systems are far easier to live with and are capable of running better in a wider variety of situations than a comparable carb setup.

My '93 Ramcharger has a relatively speaking old tech FI system. It now has 258,000 miles and the engine has never so much as hesitated, and I mean not once. FI is to Carbs as CDs are to 8-tracks. Jmo, of course.

Chesthing - In general, I do agree with you 100%. It's just that automobile FI compared to the VFR implementation of FI are two separate things. I don't think Honda has the VFR FI tuned to the point that the throttle control and responsiveness is better than the earlier non-FI VFRs. I'm hoping that they get it there someday, but in my experience of having 2 non-FI Interceptors and 2 FI Interceptors, the non-FI run much smoother.

I've put about 8,000 miles on the '00 this year and the FI functions like my autos. You turn the key no matter the temp, hit the starter wo/ touching the throttle and it fires up perfect after about 1 sec. Driveability has been perfect as well, and I havent bought a power commander - no glichiness, never a hesitation, etc. So far I'm very impressed by Honda's job on the VFR's FI.
What sort of problems did you have on your 5th gen?

I didn't have any real problems at all. Just the fact that the FI is super sensitive to your input. Again, the only reason I have an opinion is because I've ridden my 5th Gen (now a 6th Gen) back to back against both of my '86 Interceptors. If I didn't have the older bikes to compare against, then I'd think that all is good.

Try checking out Megasquirt (no, it's not porno). That's what I plan to use for FI. That is, if and when I finally get time to work on it...

Cool, I knew I wasn't the only one that felt that..:thumb: could be a case that since the 5th 6th gen have been out for almost ten years, most here don't have a clue to what the other VFRs where all about. which is okay, just don't dismiss what they do oh so well.
