Trying to figure out what needs to be fixed on my 1998 Honda VFR 57k miles where I cant seem to get any higher than 8-9k rpms at any gear.. bike runs good and idles good. searched around and few possibilities like fuel filter might be dirty or fuel injectors need cleaning... any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestions. Will start cleaning or replacing air filter. Will update once done if that does the trick.

Is this a sudden/new issue? Can we assume that a while back the bike was able to rev fully? If so have you had any work done recently which might have triggered the problem?

It is nothing really simple like a throttle cable loose or out of adjustment?

That is a great question since I dont recall myself paying attention to red liners since I tend to shift way earlier around 7-8k rpms. Recently I decided to push it and it would not get to red line and that got me concerned why and that brought me here!!! So I cant say with certainty if it ever was able to red line since I bought it 5 years ago . I did do an upgrade 2-3 years ago to the bike I put rear end and exhaust from Gen 6, like the way it looks and opens the rear wheel. Could the new exhaust affect that much? Do I need power comander to remap you think? [IMG][IMG][IMG]

If the pipe is curved too sharply and limits free flow of gases, it sure could interfere with attaining redline. You just won't be able
to get the exhaust gases out fast enough. Check for too much back pressure.

I took stock exhaust pipe from Gen 6 VFR and gutted the buffles so the cans are empty. I did not bend the pipe at all. It sounds deeper and louder like that, VFR music rumble

Je-Sus! Nice hammer though. Your bike should run better now.

I wanted to thank all of you providing me with ideas and support! The cause of the RPM not getting passed 8000-9000RPM was the DIRTY OLD airfilfer!!!! Moral of the story- keep them clean so bike can Breathe! [IMG]

I'm gonna guess you're a proud member of the "never done a valve adjustment" club (I mean, judging from the state of your air filter, which would almost certainly be the first thing you'd look at if you had ever raised the fuel tank).

GreginDenver , you are 100% right!!! I entertained that thought it is just too involved for my taste since I have no garage at the moment. Do you think I need it?

13.1V at 12500rpm seems a bit low. Is it higher at lower revs? If not there might be MORE maintenance needed soon...

I hate to be "that guy" but you go to all the trouble to change the tail end to a 6G but you can't do the valves????

Great observation it is low I actually have rectifier located in the back by exhaust pipes and I think it gets poor ventilation there and possibly overheats, otherwise when cold it gets up to 14V charging above 5k rpms and lately it has been very hot and humid outside. My original one fried and I replaced it with yamaha R1 RMStator mosfet unit. Planing to relocate it in the front probably nose section away from the engine heat and all. as to valve adjustment I am not completely sold as to if not broken do not fix thing since I see lots of people on the forum here dont bother with it. I am reading up howtos on valve adjustment and hopefully get around in the colder months to it. Want to ride while weather permits you know .... Thank you for the keen observation and suggestion I really appreciate it now since few of you mentioned Valve Adjustment ...it is on my short list of things to do!

I'd suggest you have a look at the RR connector to the stator, the 3-pin plug gets wet/corroded then overheats and melts, causing other damage. I was getting low voltage readings until I cut the connector out and soldered the wires together.

4 years ago, wow time flies, I replaced stock rectifier and also stock stator as part of the electric upgrade since 5th Gen VFR tend to suffer from that. Got electrosport ESG520 stator which did not have any plug sets so it was all crimped away. Thank you for the heads up. I have seen a lot of melted plugs out on the forums
