General question, do you think a well maintained first gen VFR750 works for a long distance tour after this many years?

I have this 1986 FG VFR750 that seems like she runs good, but does show the age on metal, hoses, and rubber bits. I am still fighting with my CHP on reg in Cali, but I am hoping to have her ready for the Oregon trail next spring.

I took one of my 1986 VFR with over 50K miles for a solo week long trip in NE B.C. a few years back and wasn't worried at all. With maintenance items taken care of they are pretty damn bullet proof. When I worked at the Honda shop we had a few customers with well over 100K on their 1986 and no major repairs, just regular maintenance.

It would depend on how well you know your machine. I happily took my 1990 ST1100 at 110,000km for a 3500 km trip without any worry it would fail me, but then I had been right through all the connectors and it had a new battery, fuel filter, fuel pump, tyres plus all the maintenance was done. My biggest worry was the fuel pump or regulator/rectifier, I doubt there is too much more that would strand you. A regularly used and maintained old bike is better than a shiny seldom-used machine.

Good input so far. :) You have convinced me to take time this winter to go through it thoroughly and get a full diagnosis completed. Thanks peeps! Stupid highway patrol.
