OK, so I finally got the thing to start but its no bueno por caca. Quick recap... I picked it up in horrible shape, do not know any history on it other than it had been sitting a long time and would not start. So here is what I've done...
    1991 VFR750 -
    pulled and cleaned carbs
    cleaned out the tank
    fuel pump is pushing gas
    filter on petcock is clean
air filter could stand to be replaced, but I've ridden on worse with no problems
    changed oil and filter
    new ignition key switch assembly
    new battery
    new plugs
cleaned every electrical connection I could with the spray clean stuff
    new (used) starter
all fuses are good, have checked them twice
radiator appears to be working and fan engages once it warms up
-that's about it as far as the engine stuff goes.

First time it fired up I had to give it quite a bit of gas to turn over. Kept the rpm's up for a while then turned the idle screw in as far as it would go to keep the rpm's high. At that setting it was holding about 4000 rpm's fairly smoothly. Slowly started backing it out, got about 1 1/2 turns out and it hit about 2000 rpm's then rpm's started swinging and falling off pretty quickly until it died. Left the idle screw there and shot the video. Right when it dies the last time, it backfires...kinda hard to tell on the video. Sound isn't the best, its off my phone. Take a listen and see if anyone can tell me if I have any major issues that are obvious (to anyone but me). The engine is warm, no choke, battery charger is hooked up to be sure I had plenty of juice, still hard to start as you'll see. I'm looking for the best place to start next to try to get it running right, if possible. Here's a link to the video.

My guess is going to be vacuum lines or clogged idle jets. I would place my bet on the jets as it seems to run fine at higher RPMs. Wait for SquirrelMan to chime in, he'll be the one with the info carbs.

I am going to second the thought on the pilot jets being plugged.

thanks everyone. I'm getting off shift today and I'll take a look at what you suggested. REALLY didn't want to tear into the carbs again. Oh well, that's what I get for not doing it right the first time. :)

Pilot jets are my guess as well. Run a single strand of wire throught them and look through them to be sure they are all equally open.

Bike is'nt firing on all four cylinders too...you could take out fuel mixture screws (easy to do-dont lose the o-ring and metal washer) and blast some carb cleaner followed by a shot of compressed air. This may or may not work, kinda the lazy mans quick and dirty carburetor service. Other-wise your gona be pulling them carbs again, not a big deal really. Gud luck...Nice video off the phone too btw
