So I pull into the driveway last night and I can smell this burning smell. Most likely electrical. Has anyone else experienced this, it would be nice to know where to start the investigation. The bike seemed to be running fine. HELP... 2000 VFR800.

Does it smell "sweet"? Does the exhaust pipe smell? Is there discoloration around the exhaust pipe?

Check your coolant level. My '99 hoses would seep when cold (and under pressure), but not when hot. There are multiple hose connections where the thermostat housing hangs in the engine bay. Coolant leaks smell "sweet".

    Oow oow that smell

I get that smell after the large Mr. Pibb & beef-n-bean burrito. never considered the smell "sweet", more like "sweat".

    seriously.....
I the smell goes away, it may have been from a car or something else that is not on your machine. :frown: Burning smell from your bike likely means something got on the exhaust, or if it is the electrical burning smell, then start with your fuse box. if you don't see anything there, then I'd keep riding and chock the smell up to someone else near you that had an electrical or burning problem... or just ate at Taco Bell.

I'm not a machanic but I have read a few posts that talk about the charging system problems and describe a melted plug right below the seat on the right side under the plastics which would probably make it very noticeable when sitting on the bike. I believe it is between the RR and the battery.

Check the voltage at the battery at about 2000rpm. Should be about 13.3v. If it is higher than that, it is overcharging. The RR?

Long story short: recently my R/R died, replaced. Stator, battery and charging good. (1998 5G)

    Re: burning smell
However, I also get that burning electrical smell after a ride from the right front area under the seat, removing the seat it comes around the fuse box area but everything checks okay. Since others mentioned they also smelled it I was wondering if this was normal? it's also alot hotter than my engine!  Any wisdom someone can impart?

Check the plug going to the RR. Mine got so hot it melted, and I had to replace the plug. No more smell.
