Lately when I start my '04 VFR I start to smell a burning smell, like burning asbestos, hard to explain it. All I have done to it is add a BMC air filter and I took it to the dealer to have the wiring harness recall work done on it. It is stock other wise. Is this just how the catalytic convertors are like or is something wrong?

not sure what burning asbestos smells like, but just a thought... did you see if it is anything that got caught on the headers or exhaust piping? or oil on it?

sorry... that is about the extent of my troubleshooting skills. :)

I get what I believe to be a similar smell sometimes, too. Generally, after I've ridden it in the rain, so I believe it's road grime sticking to the exhaust headers from spray off the front tire, then burning off.

I too had a burning smell on my 2004 and I finally found out that it was the connector from the stator to the rectifierer. The connector is on the right side as you sit on the bike. Mine ended up in a smokey mess at a stop light . The connection gets corrosion in it. You might want to check the connector.

I hope not but sounds like your bike may be going the route mine did last year. If nothing else, replace the connector with individual heavy load bullet connectors or twist/solder the stator/RR wires to each other. Also check the stator, RR and ALL the wiring between the two for damage. A VFRNess would be a good thing too.
