The service manual calls for use of a special device to suck the fluid from the lines and resevoirs. Is there a specific type of suction machine for bikes or should I be able to find one at an auto parts store?

Lastly, is use of a suction machine totally necessary?

    Thanks,

    Gunzer

You don't need a vacuum device ... its for initializing the brake system from scratch on a new system ... that hasn't had fluid before (assembly line).
You should be able to just bleed the system in the normal way (from the bleeder screws) ... be it to replace the fluid or remove air.
If you need advice on this just ask.

I have a mityvac: Link: Mityvac that works very good for completely draining and replacing the brake and clutch fluid. I don't know if you've ever tried to bleed a drained motorcycle brake line before by using the lever, but they recommend a vacuum bleeder in the manual for a pretty good reason.

If the bike had a traditional separate front/rear brake system you wouldn't really need a brake pump. But the VFR has a linked brake system in which brake lines traverse the whole bike and it's just too difficult to use the lever to bleed out all the fluid.

You could go cheap by going to Sears. They have a hand brake pump for about 60 dollars.
