Have already replaced brake pads front and rear and front rotors. Even replaced caliper mounting bolts, and that's where my question lies. Does everyone replace caliper mounting bolts every time they remove their calipers? This would even include tire changes for the right front caliper bolts. Really? Honda manual says replace. What do you say? Thanks, Gerry

I'm pretty certain the replacement is for the rotor bolts and not the caliper bolts....

I've had my calipers off multiple times and never replaced the bolts.

I've had my calipers off several times and never replaced the caliper mounting bolts, even though the HSM says they are supposed to be replaced when removed. There's a thread running here somewhere about bolt stretching and deformation, but I pulled my bolts and checked them a week or so ago and they are fine. YMMV.

This is on a '99 with 40,000 miles.

Awww... I learned the hard lesson one night about the bolt that held the sprocket to the output shaft on my 78 CB750F. At about 85 it fell out and my sprocket came off and locked up aginst the front of the swing arm. How I kept the beast stright I will never know... guardian Angel was holding the bars that night. Left a skid 75 or more yards long.
Blue locktite has always been with my tools since then.

Agreed. I think you meant the rotor bolts. IMHO, Honda makes that recommendation to protect their asses from civil liability. Suppose one bolt, or even a couple break. They are very un likely to happen at the same time, and I would think that you would notice it soon as it breaks, or very shortly afterward. I have only had mine off once, when I powdercoated the wheels a couple years back. The old ones went back on.

Curious. Why did you need to change the rotors. My rotors have something like 188,000 km on them and they have lots of meet left, and the ridge is minimal. Next time I do the pads, I will change them only just because. Bike should have well over 200K km by that time. Maybe I will have to leave that to my son to take care of after I have kicked the bucket.

You might also be interested in taking a read of this. Filter out the negatives including mine, and you should find some helpfull advice. Someone else put me onto this video.

Thanks for the replies. Factory service manual actually says replace rotor and caliper bolts. I reused, thread locked, and torqued all of them. Being type A it just stuck in my mind. None of the other manuals from other bikes I've owned specified this. Wanted others perspective. Replaced with Galfer wave rotors for the hell of it. Jorge, seems you won't have to worry about your brakes falling off as it doesn't make very far with all the junk yard Wal-Mart crap on it. Cheers!

The factory bolts come with a pre applied thread locker that is one use only. That is the reason for recommending replacement....doesn't have anything to do with stretching the bolts by torquing. Clean the OEM thread locker off, put a light dab of Loctite Blue on them and reinstall. Use only a very small amount, or it will gall the threads the next time they are removed. That is why the OEM Honda thread locker is non hardening.
