Does anybody know what the brake air guide under the swing arm just before the rear sprocket does?
Mine is missing, don't know why, but I'm not sure if I should be replacing it.

If this is what you looking for (black shield above chain?)(from my 2002 manual):

All I can think of is that it is/was a shield to keep chain lube from contaminating pads.

I think Allyancethought is correct. It may shield the brakes from chain lube and may provide increased airflow to the rotor for cooling. My 2000 VFR has never had one and the one on my 97 VFR broke after I had it for year when a squirrel crossed the road in front of me and was dispatched in a rather messy fashion after attempting to use my rear wheel as a hamster ball. Personally, I've never noticed any issues because it's missing. Well, ok, maybe the brake caliper and rotor might have had less squirrel in them after that ride but...............
