    Hi all!

I have just purchased a VFR800FiX 1999 with 25k miles on it... And I am concerned whether there is something wrong with it due to the extremely loud whirring sound it makes at a specific rpm range (this sound seems abnormally loud to me, and since it only happens in a small rpm range I'm wondering about the cause). The concern itself isn't the whirring sound(s) as I'm quite accustomed to the sounds VFRs make having owned a VFR750F-N for almost 7 years, but the sheer volume of the sound is concerning as it's so loud that it covers any other sound made by the bike.

    Description of the issue
    -------------------------------------
    - A very loud whirring sound that only happens around 4100-4400 rpm range
    - The sound is present in every gear, at the exact same rev range
    - The sound is present irrespective whether accelerating past this range, cruising at this rev range, or engine breaking below this range
    - When the bike is parked and in neutral, and revved to the same range; the sound is not present
    - The sound does not seem to be present when the engine is still cold or is warming up (I have driven the bike 4 times now, first time being a short test drive but didn't notice the sound then presumably because the engine didn't get warm enough, but every time after that the sound has been there as driven long enough of a trip)

Any insight on this would be much appreciated! Is this normal? Could there be something wrong with gears / engine?

I did try to record the sound with my GoPro, but unfortunately the differences in the levels of volume do not make the sound justice - but hopefully it's noticeable enough here:

(Video starts off with a bit of idling, and then followed by the 'best example' of the sound from cruising first around 5000rpm and then upon dropping the revs, the sound gets louder)

That loud noise is the gear train driving the camshafts. It's on the right side of the crankcase so it's louder than previous generations of the 750 which had the gear drive in the middle. It's perfectly normal. 4200 ish seems to be peak volume resonance on both of my VFR800Fis as well.

If I'm doing some night riding I try to keep it around that 4000 - 4500 RPM range to scare away the deer. :)

Thank you for the knowledgeable response and for putting my mind at ease! Coming from a VFR750 with no 'hotspots' on the amplitude of whirring like that it just got me a bit worried.

Great tip regarding scaring away the deer too!

your VFR sounds normal to me. I have noticed a bit more gear driven camshaft noise when the engine oil is older.
