Having been on a short trip recently and having to deal with bike security, specifically luggage, I have a question.
When you are loaded up with gear that may be strapped, taped or just sitting there, what do you do when you have to leave the bike alone?
I was able to take my helmet and tank bag with me when it was out of site but seeing what some of you carry it made me wonder how you manage when there isn't a travel partner to watch over it when you are away from it, we all have to use the facilities sometimes.
I have a padlock and long chain that I have used in the past threaded through my jacket and helmet when I have had to leave it but that won't always work.
    Just wondering.

How I imagine it feels when really loaded up.

When away on long trips, my soft luggage and bags, just stayed on my tail.
Having ROK straps and a net bungee over all of my closed bags made me feel somewhat okay...hoping it would be enough to deter people from taking the time in undoing everything and drawing attention to themselves.

I don't make many stops where I am away too long when going solo.
The longest stop I've ever made on a trip was recently in Jasper while doing some tours, but the area wasn't an obvious ghetto.

Other than that, I would unload my belongings and leave it at camp or in a hotel or housing while I was out.

I realize things could get stolen anywhere, but going with your gut and not leaving your things in questionable areas sometimes is all you can do, especially if you don't have locked panniers.

As for my tank bag, helmet, and riding gear, I've gotten used to carrying them with me. Sometimes locking up my helmet and/or jacket as you described.

I just make sure no matter what, I don't leave anything on my moto that I can't replace with things from the local Wal-Mart or Cabela's.
My financial and identity documents, spare key, electronics, etc., always stay on my person or in my tank bag that I never leave unattended.

I usually travel really light, I tend to buy things as I go for long trips, I look for a motel that has a ground floor door access and pull my bike inside the room at night because with my suzuki front end i cant lock the bike up. Ya know i am going to change that right now since my bike is apart. I need to chuck the frame up in my mill and machine a groove in the neck for the lock pen to fit into. I also have a alarm on the bike too. And I yes i carry when im on trips. I have in the past had a tank bag that i did not like.
Thank you for this thread and bring this up now i have something to do lol

But i have encountered getting the cops called for putting my bike inside. What else can i do ? A cage can be left outside but a bike that doesn't lock up is a setting duck.

Had a Kryptonite lock around a pole and the cover on my FZR 1000 gone in 60 seconds, had it three weeks----if they want it they'll get it. Hand held diamond blade saws.
At least thats what the cops told me

What an animal to steal someone else's bike and stuff. I wonder if those disc locks with noise alarms would do any good. Some are supposed to go to an ear-splitting 120db. In my state, bullets do a good job but you have to catch them in the act and it's legal to protect your property. The "Pablo Escobar method".

So I post a question then am not able to get online for the weekend. Thanks for the responses guys. Pretty much as I figured then, Lock what you can , carry the valuables and hope the rest stays put. I guess that having the important stuff locked or with you is about all you can do. Clothes, tents and camping stuff can be replaced on the go but losing phones, tablets, gps, wallets and such can really wreck the trip.
