Ok so I got my 85 vf500 to run good a few weeks ago. So I took it up a local hill to see what she can do and she did not like it one bit. About .5 miles up the hill it started to loose power and require more throttle so I down shifter and then it had no throttle response and died. So I turned around and coasted down the hill tried to push start it... nothing after about the 4th try it started and died 20 secs later. So I coasted to the bottom and sat of ten mins. Continued coasted and tried push starting it again and it started and ran fine. Rode for about a mile and same thing bogged down and died. Pulled over wouldnt start. Pushed it 4 blocks and tried restarting it started fine rode it home. So some variables for ya my fuel pump is deleted and my gas cap is broken so it doesn't seal. But when I was trying to restart the bike there was gas in the filter so the carbs were full and it wouldn't restart.

Bike has 44000 it has a fair amount of chain noise in the motor but I'm told thats normal?? I did a valve adjustment, replace spark plugs and wires also check the timing and its dead on.

Wet spark plugs? If no then there is still problem with fuel feed.

Sounds like its losing fuel as you get the bike on an incline. How did you modify the petcock after deleting the fuel pump??

I had a very similiar problem on a recent trip... er.. last week. I found it to be really dirty carbs, specifically the floats. I cleaned them and the bike is fine. Check the carbs.

I know on a Hawk GT you can run it without the fuel pump only if the tank is more than half full.

sounds exatcly like the dead battery/ regulator rectifier combo that happened to me. it toasted the battery and the bike ran for about a mile or so but then shortly died after that. I would do a search for that on here. its a pretty common problem.

after I replaced the battery with a aftermarket one, and a RR from a R1 it runs and starts great!
