I have a 2005 VFR setup with a power commander and Leo Vance slip-on that is my daily rider. Thinking about selling my 2k VFR , 2003 Yamaha 600R, and 04 R1 for another 6th Gen VFR and trying to decide what or if any mods are necessary for the 2006 - 2009 VFRs. What would be the better low cost suspension mod recommendations? Also what is the average costs NYC riders have paid for the VTEC valve adjustment and shops that do good work. I suffered a couple of strokes and can ride but my hands are no good for serious wrenching. Is it worth getting an earlier 2002 - 2004 VFR and doing the mods or would I be better off getting 2006 - 2009 model? Any suggestions are appreciated. I am planning on using the bike for long distance rides and touring - my current 05 VFR is for more spirited rides - gonna have suspension upgrades done.

Well Emon. I have over 100K miles on my 06 and have had relatively no issues to speak of. The RR has been replaced and the stator went at about 97K miles. I can't speak for the others. I did have the front suspension rebuilt and put Ohlins on the back a couple years ago but suspension was way over due for upgrading or even servicing.

I like the graphics on the 06 but then again, stock appearances may be what you want.

Am I just seeing reflections or does that exhaust heat shield on the right side of the 06 look warped?

I do see that the 06 does not have ABS while the other does. I love my linked ABS.

The 08 VFR has ABS with Two Brothers slip-ons and comes with Honda color matched saddlebags - the Dealer wants $7,100.00 for that bike. The 06 has pretty plastics and seems to be all stock - they want 5k for it. I thought the heat shield looked funny also. Thanks for your opinion

Whichever one you choose, I'd recommend making sure it has ABS, especially for your commuter.

+1 to what Long said, especially if this will be your "touring" bike and like most later generations most of the trouble spots have been addressed. For reference, I bought my '09 in California back in 2011 and it listed for $7499.00 ($500 less than KBB w/346 miles on the ODO). My '09 is the commuter/tourer in my collection with my '01 and Duc being for "sport" riding. The one good thing about the 6 Gen is that parts are readily available and considering they still offer this platform in Australia and other countries, it's really still a "current" generation.

I can't be certain what applies in the USA, but in Europe - apart from cosmetic colour changes - the basic bike is essentially the same from 2006 to 2013 models. (Yes they are still selling them (CBR600F | Sporttourer | Motorcycles | Honda (UK)) alongside the 1200's over here - so parts will still be around for donkeys years to come.)

The ABS models command a significant and justifiable premium even if they add a few kg and they make adjusting preload a breeze - no wrenching required.

If you can find a properly maintained 2006 ABS model it should offer the cheapest bang for your bucks. Then PM JamieDaugherty who is the resident suspension guru and he should be able to help you get the suspension & handling set just right on both of your VFRs. If you can bag one with Helibars and a Sargent seat and a full set of OEM touring luggage you will have a bike which will make long distance touring a lot more comfortable.

Let us know what you find - we like pictures!

I like the all stock 08. I prefer to do my own mods.

Thanks for the advice - I am leaning toward the 2008 with the Honda saddlebags and ABS that is local for me and lists for $7,100.00. The only thing is it has 14k miles and will be needing the Valve adjustment at 16k miles. I need to see if the dealer will come down on the price to $6,500.00 or so. The ABS option on the bike is what I like the most. The only other bike I am considering is another 2007 I found locally that is stock with only 7,800 miles, but does not have the ABS option - lists for $6000.00.

FWIW I think the third one is the better deal for you. Then search put some hard bags or get so Givi bags which are the same thing I think. If you do go with the $7100.00 one I would not worry about the valves. That topic has been beaten here and everyone seems to agree it does not need to be done. Mine was within spec so that was one hell of a lot of money I laid down needlessly. I think you should be able to work them down a fair amount on that price though.
