As I was out on this years 1st ride, I was marveling at how nice the VFR exhaust sound is (Akrapovic). The VFR reminds me of my early vertical twins (Norton, Triumph) at low RPM's, and then a great howling shriek at higher rpm's that really must sound awesome to the roadside observer. My old Moto Guzzi sounds like a motorcycle should too, almost like a slice of a Chevy V8 (90 degree twin) and it has stock mufflers (albeit 40 years old). Then theres my ZRX1200 (also full Akrapovic) and it sounds most like a sports car, a deep gutteral growl, even approching 9000 rpm. So current bikes, I rank: 1st - VFR, 2nd Moto Guzzi, 3rd ZRX. What has been your favorite sounding bike you've ever had? Mine? 1978 Ducati Darmah SD, with Conti mufflers, big bore hi comp kit, Jerry Branch flowed heads, and 40mm Delorto's......That one NEVER failed to turn heads, and sounded like it meant business from quite a distance. What's your favorite?
Oh, the Ducati Moto GP bike sounds pretty good too!!!

I Can can agree with a CBX being a cool exotic Ferrari like sound. but I tell ya the VFR 750 with it's gear driven cams with a stain-tune has just about everything beat in my book. talk about Music in all ranges.

    Moto-Guzzi V8

Ya wanna hear what a VFR really sounds like? Fire it up and run it without the can.

Did I own a Guzzi V8..Naaa but I'm sure someone here did. Probably raced one and was a top gun, taught Bill Gates everything he knows about computers and was hosing Farah Fawcett. All back in the day..

HD KR's sound good with straight pipes at about 5000rpm.

A piped VFR is damn fine, but #1 for me was a '98 RVF (RC45) with full race exhaust and some other mods, I can't remember which. It wasn't mine but I had the pleasure of riding it several times and had to experience the perpetual envy that came along with listening to it every weekend at the track. That throaty, almost Italian automobile sound, with cams you could easily hear from 100 yards away, was more like a high compression V12 (Lamborghini) than a motorcycle. Totaly unique and completely unforgettable.

Every one that immediately started up after I worked on it (some didn't).

My old Norton had a mildly modified motor with an Alphabet 2-1 header that sounded nice. The 1100F has a Bassani 4-1 that has an angry bumblebee sound that I've always liked.

Actually, I think I like the way every well-tuned engine sounds. The only ones I don't like are engines with loud pipes that are running too lean.

I loved the sound my Nortons made, you can hear the individual exhaust right and left from behind you in stereo. I used to like to watch the forks shake at idle. I am researching how to make the VFR a little louder without totally gutting the whole muffler. I like the cutting the tips out, that looks like the best option for me. Are there any other suggestions?

Daytona 675 with a Jardine slip on. Just a bit too loud. But a piped VFR800 aint too shabby...

Although not asked, worst was my cammed EX500with stock exhaust. Sounded like a lawn mower. Much better after a Vance and Hines complete system

I liked my CBR900...slip on TBR. Nice, not overly loud, deep sound. A lady around here used to have a VTR with the twin TBR. Sounded good as well. I don't care for the buzzing or the tinny sounds.

My '99 catless Gen 5 VFR with Carbon ARROW is the best sounding bike I've ever owned although the SV650S I had in '03 with full Yoshi sounded supprisingly good if a bit loud a rider following remarked at the time he could tell exactly when I was about to have fun....Best sounding old bike I rode in '84 was a mates '81 SD900 Desmo Darmah with straight through Contis, it sounded very cool addictive when rolling on and off the throttle and one of the best sounding motorcycles of the time.
