My gen 5 is acting up again and I want to fix this Reg/Rec for good. Some have suggested substituting a Suzuki Reg/Rec instead of Honda. Does this resolve this issue for good? I can't keep shelling out $$$ for a Reg/Rec and/or Stator every season.

This problem is well documented here in the UK too. The problem is the heat generated by the unit eventually kills it stone dead.

The standard Reg/Rec for your bike is the SH579A-11. The failure rate for these is very high, somewhere over 70%.

There is a much better replacement part available, the SH689DA. This gives a slightly lower output voltage of around 13.8v compared with about 14.2v for the SH579A-11 but it runs a lot cooler. The failure rate for the SH689DA is very low indeed.

I have attached a picture of them both taken fron a UK VFR site for comparison. The original unit is on the left and the upgraded one is on the right. The difference is quite marked.

Good luck with it and hope this helps a little.

+1 on Wire My Bike It's a pretty easy install. All you have to do is disconnect the R/R and connect it to the wiring harness. Then connect the other wire to the negative terminal on the battery.

    I used a Suzuki GSXR R/R from '00-'05 ( I think) definitely '02-'04

This is a BEEFY unit, with great cooling fins.
You can get these on Ebay for dirt cheap. I have 2 extra just in case, but I've put almost 10K on the bike since w/ no charging issues.

I simply cut out that part of the harness, and rewired it with 10ga wiring.
Then used thick rubber heatshrink tubing and electriczal tape to seal it back up.
You cant even tell it was modified.

The Suzuki R/R is a direct plug and play unit.
The 3 blk wires go to Honda yellow
The 1 blk/red wire goes to the Honda red (+)
The 1 blk/wht wire goes to Honda Green (-)

You can add extra Positive and Negative wires direct from your battery terminal as well for added security if you like.

IF your feeling REALLY froggy and want to make this a full flegged project, look up Pontiac_Banshee's write up about his R/R project.

OEM part has been upgraded by Honda. Way better heat management.

Bigestg advantage to sticking OEM: no need to slash into your electrical system.

Following Pearl-93's recommendation I also put a GSXR unit on mine a few months back, seems to be a common modification (some also use one off an R1). Mine was from a 98-99 GSXR750, and cheap on Ebay. I also upgraded the wiring and installed a fan on it. Can't personally speak to reliability as I've only had it on for about 700Km's, but no problems yet. When I researched it I hadn't been able to find a post of anyone having a GSXR or R1 unit fail after doing the switch.

I have gone with the big fin OEM unit and so far so good. Sye has a great pic above.
I plan to do the "wire my bike" upgrade and I think the 2 together will be a permanent fix.
