I have always like the Honda Chain wax for lube. Doesn't throw off easily after applying. As far as the best way to clean, someone else might have a better idea but i use some sort of cleaner with a toothbrush.

never cleaned one. you can let it get dry then take it for a spin, that'll knock debris off! i always use the honda lube.

    Any chain wax is good.

Use Honda, Bel-Ray or any good chain wax.

WD 40 is not good for your o-rings, though some luddites still claim WD 40 is best.

    I think that I cleaned a chain.... once!:caked:

I have always used Bel-Ray chain lube on all of the motorcycles I have owned, dirt or street, and never had any problems with it.

WD40 for cleaning off side plates Maxium chain wax for the road. I've tried this new to me product that Dupont makes, nice stuff, still think the Maxium product is better.

Dunno fo sho, but that DuPont product may not be thick enough to handle chain speed, heat, rattling, shaking and general resistance to anything clinging to it.

i used to put it on my mountain bike.

Wax is the way to go. stays put, repels water. way cleaner. The dupont product works really well, thou as you said does want to fling a bit more and when it dries leaves a white resedo, I didn't care for the slight clean up, but hey I needed a great lube anyway so it wasn't a waste.

I clean my chain with WD-40 and a toothbrush (but I'm a dentist), being sure to wipe off the excess. I follow this with either Honda's lube (not very waterproof) or more recently, Motul chainlube (better waterproofing, less fling). I get about 17K miles out of a chain. Admittedly, I don't floss around the sprocket teeth.

    Chain lube

I have been using PJ1 for several years. Used a Castrol lube before but didn't like the gooey black residue. The PJ1 is clear, penetrates a warm chain easily and thickens up in minutes. There is minimum flyoff. I lube my chain after two tanks of gas and have only wiped the side of the chain a few times with WD-40 sprayed on a rag. I have about 13,000 miles on this chain so far.

I'm tellin ya, that PJ1 is some good stuff. It goes on easy and clear, penetrates, and I haven't seen a lot of cast-off on my wheel or other parts. Thanks for the verification vifferman.

Wow. I'm more old school than I thought. I use standard 80-90 gear oil and have a great looking chain at almost 29000 mi. Of couse there's a lot of comments about cast off here, and that doesn't seem to bother me as I don't get crazy with the lube and splatter the sidewall. Perhaps I'd change my mind if I tried a less conventional approach. I've heard good things about PJ1 in the motorcycle mags.

I believe that it is a product of BELRAY oil products. I may give it a try myself as my Honda lube is almost used up (not that I have any issue with the Honda lube). I remain open to new ideas!

If I had pretty Vortex sprocket and a gold RK chain, I would probably spend more time cleaning than I do. As it is I just keep it lubed well and adjusted.

To my knowledge (unless it has been bought) PJ1 is a seperate company and competitor to Bel Ray. I have used PJ1 before, but felt that while it was a good product, the Bel Ray Chain Lube did a much better job. I used teh Pj1 when I started riding dirt bikes and hd a number of chain failures. After switching to Bel Ray, the failures stopped. But then, that was back in the early 80's and product develpment and technology has changed. In all, it is riders preference what to use and all we can give is our opinions.
