Balancing the engine!

    I have a Mercury 4 Cylinder Vacuum Guage. Where are the places to plug into the 4 cylinders? Also, any specs I need to know for synchronizing the system?

    Pics would be helpful.

    PS. Doing this with my father in law who knows more than me, but need basic info that is specific to my 98 vfr800 for him!

    Remove the two bolts at the front of the tank and prop the tank up for access. The VFR has four rubber tubes already connected to the inlets for synchronisation, these plug onto stubs either side of the airbox, just pull them off and connect to your vacuum gauges.

    The starter valves are located in a bank on the right side between the airbox and the frame rail. Cylinder 1 is the fixed reference and the other three should be synched to this, #2 should match #1, # 3 should be 20mm Hg below #1, #4 should be 10mm Hg below #1 (as per the Honda manual, yes they are deliberately uneven).

    The starter valves adjustment screws are numbered (looking at bike from right side) back to front 3, 1 (no screw), 2, 4. You can turn these using a 7mm open end wrench.

    The engine should be at normal operating temp and idle revs should be set to 1200 rpm, you can access the adjuster screw through the hole drilled in the right frame spar (might have a rubber cap that gets removed).

    Don't forget to reconnect the vacuum hoses to the stubs on the airbox when you're done.
