I have run the gamut on electrical issues between my two vfrs, but this one has me wondering a little. I had charging problems and got those figured out and all modded up. The new (intermittant) problem is that sometimes when I turn the key the bike acts like the battery is dead - which it isn't. There are also several variations to the problem. sometimes all the lights and the injector pumps come on, when I thumb the starter button everything goes out -dead. Sometimes I hear a clicking sound coming from the vicinity of the starter relay. Sometimes after it even does these odd things, I will turn the key on and off and keep fiddling and the bike starts right up like nothing is wrong.

It did this once before a few months ago until last week when it did it many times and then on a day ride Saturday - and I thought I was stranded. I cleaned off the contact to the negative battery terminal and it started, then I turned it off to finish a coffee and came back and was acting strange again.

Now, I haven't had the chance to get in there and clean all the terminals and plugs and such, but will do so when I get the chance.

    coud be ignition switch

check the plug-in connector between ign switch and wiring harness

clean the contact area between negative battery terminal and chassis ground

unbot and clean the contact point where fat wire connects to starter

check 30 amp main fuse contacts for signs of heat

The starter is the biggest amperage draw on the bike. I agree with checking all grounds. When the solenoid clicks that means the magnetic switch inside is actuating. However that does not mean you have enough juice to to run the starter motor. Check all starter connections ground and hot.

If you wriggle the key and the wires comming out of the ignition switch does the situation change? If so, it could be the ignition switch but you bike is only 7 years old. I think this is too soon to have ignition switch problems unless you have a lot of miles on it wit a lot of ignition switch cycles.
