Well I got my bike all torn down and tiped it on its side and water came pouring out. Thats when it hit me the bottom section of the frame was bowed because water had gotten in and froze it. I put my couture gauge on it to show the difference. So I guess for now I am going to switch the vin plate and get my parts bike running and ride it and when I get a little more money switch the necks. Im very bummed I was looking forward to using the original frame.

I think switching VIN plate is a bad idea, since the VIN is also stamped on the frame up near the steering head. Best to go to local DMV and ask about switching frame and get proper paper work ahead of time.

The frame is not considered bad by Honda. There was a Honda Service bulletin on the 500s to drill extra drain holes on 1984 models. It said if your frame had swollen, it is not bad and to still drill the holes. I understand it is in their interest to say this though.

I have an 84 500 frame (titled) that has this too. I thought about heating that area and trying to hammer/work it back to more square before paint or powder coat. At least the side and top that are visible.

Thanks I will take a look at it and drill some small holes and see how much rust is in there

I don't recommend heating it up to get it back into shape. It will be a work hardened steel tube and if you get it too hot you could soften it.

I will scan the service bulletin if I can find it.

Hear what you're saying about the heat, but I think a little heat to help it along would be ok. It is just a lower frame loop in between 2 engine mounts. This isn't the steering stem or swingarm area.

Yes, you are probably OK if you keep it below 350-400degC.
If it's glowing you're in trouble!
