Well, after a minor drop in the driveway by the 16 year old daughter helping me move bikes around, Wife's viffer has been patched up and ready for another season. Added some covers to clean up the look and she wanted a little blue to offset the white & silver.

Dang, that looks really good. How did you paint it? Looks better than a rattle can job. I like the look of the tail too.

Can you give some details on how you modified the tail? The bike looks pretty sharp even though I am not a big fan of tribal graphics.

    Regards,
    Rollin

Paint is just dupli-color from auto-zone out of a gravity gun. the graphic is the best i could match to a modern honda wing type. the tail was done last season. It's a 2000 Yamaha R6 race tail off e-bay for $40. had to slice up and re weld the frame extention a bit to make it work right. She only rides solo and I thought it had a more modern look compared to the old 80's style fat ass the gen 3 came with.

Repost of how I did the tail...

"here is the explenation of how i changed tails...
started by stripping all the plastics and electrical. I took note of the currnet way every thing was mounted like fuel pump,RR and asorted electral. Brake light and signals, mark the wire if you dont have the manual and ditch them in the spare part bin.
First pic. I then pulled the tail subframe off the bike. I then gound away all the welds that kept it together and planned on shortining it and dropping weight here i could. Keep in ming where all the electical componants need to go and how they mount. I was able to use all the rubber and hardware when i reattached the steel plates and tabbs in the correct locations.
Second pic. Now here is where you gotta get creative. WHAT TAIL? I went and logged on (where else?) EBAY! the plan was a solo seater because she had no intentions of ever having a passenger. I got 2 tail for less than $100. one an yam 600 1986 tail and one off a 2000 yam R-6 racer. both used and needed love. the 2000 just cooperated better to fit it all up.
A- this is the stock mounting points of the tail frame. slightly angled up on the upper, and dramatic on the lower. I shortened it alot.
B- the blue lines are roughly the location on the steel frame. The high point has a pad that supports the tail with as little added weight possible. I wanted a lighter VFR, not more steel. passenger pegs also went to the bin.
C- the turns and plate bount are right outta spare part bin ( as noted earlier) turns off a 2004 yam FZ1, and plate and light of a 2006 Shadow VLX. they look better now, but i wanted it on the road and leagal. Break light/running light was an oval LED trailer lamp from the automotive store mounted in an aluminum plate bolted to the frame.
D- notes the new location of the RR on this side of the bike for refferance.
E- I chopped the seat right off with a sawzall. not fancy but it worked. the new set mount is a bolt and wing nut through the plactic pan. I reshaped the foam with an electric turkey knife and stapled new vinyl over the foam. there was a gap. i used a leather tool bag to fill it and give her some sort of storage.
Third pic. Better pic of how it rolled out last year."

I'VE BEEN ALL FOR THE HIGH MOUNT, FINDING IT HAS NOT BEEN EASY. I have a buddy who is a pro and welds stainless. was going to take the bike to him and get some tube bends and just make one in house this season. Im hopefull anyway.

Sweet, that's definitely a very tasty looking VFR! The bike has an almost European flair to it now Vfrhusband. Very nicely done! I really like your alternate interpretation of the Honda wing logo graphic, and that RC36 numberplate on the tail section is a particularly nice touch. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that your daughter dropped the bike,it gave you a chance to create this beauty! I'm betting your wife's happy. BTW,I'm with Btay67,she owes.

Thanks guys. She does love this bike. We both had the day off and got them ready to roll out. Cold rain in ohio right now but tomarrow is supossed to be nice. got the oil change done , new ngk Iridiums in the FZ1 and new air cleaner. Her plugs were perfect in the viffer, cleaned her uni filter, fresh Honda Pro oil, and gonna air up the tires now. be hitting pavement at 0600 hours in the am. I think Im forced into a 13 hour day tomarrow at work. Be nice to be able to unwind on 2 wheels again on the way home.

I agree with all. Very nice tail and pait job! I noticed you're in NE Ohio. I stay in Ashtabula County but am in Lake a lot. Are you planning on going on the Niagara ride at the end of May? I would love to see that VFR in person.

    may ride

Planning on riding alot this year. When I asked Kristin if she thought her old '92 gen 3 could make it to the fall's she only reponded that "my bike can do anything" <sigh> typical viffer rider! Let us know the details and well see what we can do with work & kids.

P.S. (abnviffer) just looked at your gallery. From the seinior wings I now get the "ABN" part. When its not math or 1000 meters away snipers are slow...
