Hello again, well I was back at it again Today, looking at the VFR, Cleaning it some more, and taking inventory. I want to say thanks to Squirrelman for the advice about the front sprocket, its a mod that I am going to do within the month of Jan., chain and sprocket.
More immediately I would like to try to solve the problem of my throttle not snapping back after releasing the throttle from accelerating. I have taken the bar end off the throttle side and removed the srews from the assembly that holds it to the bar and slid the throttle 3/4 off the bar and put a little grease on the bar and reconnected the throttle to the bars, that didnt work so I think it is either in my carbs or the cables themselves. I noticed that when the bike was just idling that it would start to idle up on its own, but what causes that? Cables? The idle screw is as far out as I can have it. I think it has something to do with the return cable side not having enough pull, am I thinking clearly on this? Not sure what to do.

You're on the right track, I found that my return cable was loose when I first got my '96. I am assuming that since both these bikes are about the same, you can adjust the slack out of these cables on the left side of the bike where they join the carbs. Loosen the lock nut, and then spin the threaded section until the cable is taught, but not "tight". Do the same for the "pull" side of the cables as well. This should fix the throttle return issue you seem to be having. it may also remedy your high idle, but I think there is something else going on there.

non-returning throttle can be caused by sticky cables as well as too much freeplay or, more likely, not enough freeplay. also incorrect routing of cables. shoot some lube like WD 40 down cables at throttle cable ends on twistgrip.

sounds like your choke cable is sticky and not returning to full OFF position.
the return spring on this cable is not strong, maybe stretched out, needs inspection. shoot lube on choke cable too.
you need to remove fuel tank, top of airbox, filter and bottom of airbox....easy things. then you can see the choke valves and the choke cable and return spring...

you need to buy or download the official Honda Factory shop manual for your bike, then read, study and learn. It will save you time, frustration, money and make everything easier for you!

Thanks, yeah well I dont have the choke cable even on. I bought it with the choke cable non operational.( The choke can be engaged manually by removing the gas tank and setting it on the subframe though) I have ordered a new one and it is in but with the holiday the dealer is closed. so wed. Im gonna pick it up and install it. Ill check the spring too, didnt know about that. I will also try the throttle adjustment. so I figure that the choke is essential when not even technically in use, Huh?

each carb has a small brass plunger (choke, or enrichener valve) which can stick and not fully return to full OFF....probable cause of fast idle and erratic idle speed.

ALSO you should check that all 8 clamping bands that secure carbs to motor through the rubber manifolds are tight. an air leak anywhere here will cause erratic or fast idle. you'll need to put a nice sharp phillips-head on each clamp and tighten as necessary....

once your bike has been carefully gone through, the only troubles are electrical.
