    1. What is the average (or general range) rpm that you hold while cruising around town?

    2. Is check-shifting bad (trying to shift up from 6th only to remember that you're already in 6th, essentially just letting the clutch in and out)?

Just cruising between stoplights, I usually find it pretty comfortable at 4500.

The VFR has been ridden by every kind of idiot out there and still has a bulletproof reputation so I wouldn't sweat your shifting or RPM choice.

I usually find myself cruising between 5 & 6k. Ive only had mine for a month but I don't think I've hit 6th yet. I use to have that issue on my 748 all the time though. I'd be in 6th and would try to reach for another gear.

I switch off between a Ninja 500 and my gen 3 Viffer. I find fourth gear works nice for around town riding...4500 to 5500 er So...When I head out on the highway, I sometimes reach for a 6th gear when I am already there only when I dont look down at the tachometer and am in the heat of battle with my merging (they will rip yah another arse hole down here/lousy drivers) Use that 6th gear as a hauling arse gear though, mine stays in 5th until 90mph or soo...My bike shifts like butta btw  not to be confused with a butta face girl...

Cruise at 5k to 6k for the most part.

I don't slab unless I'm running late for something, so I usually only see 6th gear twice a year or so. Last time I saw 6th I think was September 2011. It was pouring rain, everyone but me blew off the ride, and I think I hit 6th around 90 or so because I wanted to get home.

    I don't think I've ever tried for 7th.

Lol wow maybe I need to ride mine a little harder. I shift at like 3-4.5K and think I am beating on her at 7K. Its so torquey and buttery smooth down low love this V4. My bike does seem like it shifts better at higher revs though.

Actually, at 3000, you're close to "lugging" the engine. As you observed, these bikes do just fine in higher RPMs. 7K is definitely NOT beating on her.

I'm not the fastest guy by any means, but when I'm riding with our usual group, about the only time I ever see 7k is when I'm stopping or starting. Otherwise, I'm wringing the hell outta her. Its how they were meant to be ridden.

I like to keep it above 6k unless I'm wanting to bug folks then I'll let it rev a little more.

Haha! I run it up to 7-8 when I am having fun lol! I guess its good to know that V4 is safe up in those ranges. Just love my bike and like to baby it I guess. Once in awhile it will see 9K but just like the lower RPMs I guess. So used to car motors seeing something that can go to 12K is like HOLY CRAP!
